IF (and I realize it's a big if) our government allows itself to go into "default" next week without an agreement on the debt ceiling, there are going to be some rather nasty things happen in which the more self sufficient you are the better you will do. If you depend on a retirement check or SSI and such from the fed good luck as they won't be making those out without a budget. Food and gas are expected to rise substantially and availability of food from stores will dry up with transportation costs skyrocketing. The Stock Market will of course tank, no surprises there. It's going to be a tough ride indeed. If one has a good store of food, wood for their fires and enough fuel to tough it out it won't be nearly as bad. I suspect many of you folks that live in the more rural areas will do better than us city folk. Let's hope these fools in D.C get their friggen acts together and avoid this mess.

If the debt ceiling isn't raised, Idahoans will take a beating for sure. There are a lot of farmers who won't be able to pay their help for the spud harvest, and the harvest is beginning right now. Those farmers won't be able to plant next year, so the bite will only worsen.
The same goes for all our other mainstays. Having some home preparedness is very good, but it will only last for so long. The shutdown has already begun effects that won't show up until it's over.

I doubt many of us are really prepared for pure subsistence living. I'm probably better positioned for it than most of us here, and I know I am not ready for long term subsistence. It's too late in the year now for me to become prepared, other than to do some basic home preparation stuff. If our government defaults, this winter could become a mighty cold and hungry one for me.

I'll have to think about cooking the puppy, I guess, but I'll put that off until he grows some more. He'll be more tender than an old saddle horse, but wouldn't be much of a meal until next year.

I'm sure you must be kidding of course. Dog isn't Kosher It's times like this I suppose being a skilled hunter would come in real handy, not to mention being a knowledgeable survivalist type. Sure hope we don't have to find out however. I miss the days when government actually kind of worked for the most part. That would take me back a good 50 years however

Yeah- I'm pulling your leg about the puppy. I'll eat the saddle horse first and save the pup for later.

No. Really, I won't eat either one. I'm a regular on the Idaho forums, and I've been making a big deal out of my new pup here lately. Seriously- I will not eat either one. I was just having a little fun with some of the other regulars.

It's rare that I "lol" for real when on the internet, I did at that comment. Thank you Mike.

hahaha... I would imagine they wouldn't be tasty at all, if nothing more than just because you know what it is you are eating.
