Smile Former Air Force at Mountain Home

It's been a long time since I was there - (1973) What is Mtn Home like now and would it be a good place for my husband and I to retire? Are there nice homes there for sale around the $140,000 range?

I don't know what Mtn Home was like in 1973 but we were stationed there in 1990, and moved back this year after a decade in Boise. It has improved greatly and is growing quite a bit. There's a Wal-Mart, new cheese factory, but most people still drive to Boise to shop, good restaurants, culture etc. The whole area around Mtn Home has grown too, Hagerman, Pine-Featherville or no longer little teeny places with log cabins, but expensive Sun Valley style homes are going in there. The outdoor recreation is fantastic, if you're into that. There are still nice homes you can get here for around $150,000. There are many new subdivisions and many proposed new ones in development. They look like homes in Boise only not as expensive. If you're a military retiree, the base is such an asset to be close to for the commissary, BX, hospital, rec center. Hope this helps.

Was in the 366 EMS during that disaster known as the Composite Wing. Loved the job, base and area though. After years of "we're closing the base..." and "we're opening the base again..." I'm glad to see the USAF finally doing right by the locals. Mountain Home grew a LOT during our two years there ('94-'96) Although we lived in Boise for wife's job and other amenities, MH is really coming into it's own! Being back in Mountain Home sure would be a lot better than competeing with the many more other retirees here at Wright-Patt...
