Wink No time for work

You won't have time to work if you are moving to the clearwater river drainage. There are too many fish and deer and elk and bears and other tasty critters to catch and eat that will take up all of your work time. Fishing is great although there are a few tricks you need to know in order to catch the really big ones. I lived in that area for 25 years and the fishing has gotten worse. The secret to catching big trout up there now is get off the bank and drift down river in a tube or raft and fish toward the bank. People will laugh when they hear this, but trust me. After spending twenty years watching the fishing start to dwindle, I was desperate and this was what worked. Now, you can still catch a 16 0r 18 in trout from the bank, but if you want a 3 or 4 lb. fish try it.

Light winters, Kamiah is only 1200 feet. All the snow you want in the surrounding mountains. Fishing and Hunting is great. Whitetail numbers are high, Elk is a little tougher, lots of bears, good upland bird hunting. Bait depends on target species of fish. Good old night crawlers are hard to beat for bass and trout. Some of the Cutthroat waters like the Lochsa are catch and release with no bait regs. The main rivers are good for smallmouth bass from Kooskia to Orofino, trout from Kooskia upstream (middlefork, Selway, Lochsa). Steelhead and Salmon fishing can be good at times, bobber and jig tipped with shrimp or bouncing corky and yarn from the bank, plugs or bouncing sandshrimp or eggs from a drift boat.
