Hi All:

I have a private driveway that is gravel and about a half-mile long. I'm looking to put down some more gravel to take care of some soft (mushy) spots. I was also considering getting some general repair/maintenance done, such as fixing some potholes and having it graded to re-establish the crown for proper drainage.

Being a new property owner in the area (Sagle, near Round Lake State Park) I'm a little light on info regarding local services, so I have a few questions:

Anyone have any reasonably recent experience with anyone who does this type of work in the area that they care to recommend?

What should I expect cost-wise for this type of work?

Also, has anyone found a particular size/type/mix of gravel that performs better on the roads in the area?

I don't think I asked for anything that can't be responded to here, but feel free to DM me if you have any questions or input you would rather share privately.

Thanks for any input!

We use a guy named Kelly Lynch in Priest River (208)-597-1601
He does excellent work and is very honest. I highly recommend him.

We found the need to put road fabric down under the mushier spots. Our entire road didn't need it...just certain spots. But the road fabric, once it has a bed of 1"-minus over it, will hold in place for a long time where other gravel gets sucked down into the road bed pretty quickly in those wetter spring breakup areas. But it seems like after putting down gravel 3/4"-minus a couple seasons in a row, our road got to a pretty decent point where it's mostly OK. The little finish stuff makes for a very smooth top surface, but gets splashed out of potholes too easily. So we rarely use the little pea gravel.

I'd second what Sage says for highway mesh (sometimes called Typar, not sure about spelling) under the soft spots, then 3/4 minus over that. If you don't do mesh, a layer of 3" minus, then a layer of 3/4 will do well. I'll check into the person's name we used. He's off Cochalalla Loop road, so it's not a long haul. He is pretty reasonable.

Typar it is: Dupont Typar.

I'm sure there are other brands out there.

Oh, and before you go buy some (you are often forced to buy a big roll), send me a DM. I have a roll I bought, and I still have a lot left I'd be willing to part with either all or part...

We did a base of typar, then 8 inches of caprock (or 3"- ) compacted in two separate lifts and then a 4 inch lift of 3/4 minus on top of that. A few treatments of mag chloride to lock it together makes a big difference too.
