Idaho City
Hi everyone,
I am moving to the Idaho City area next spring/summer. Can anyone here give me the good, the bad, and the ugly of the area.
Is there any cell phone service in that area? Which companys?
Any input is good input!
Thanks,
Ken

The bad and the ugly are the long time residents. They are mountain folk through and through. However more people from the city are moving up there, so it isn't all "hillbillys" The good, it is a very pretty area up in the mountains, and it is only about an hour to Boise if you need anything, entertainment, etc.

Thanks Justin,
Well, I got to say, I am one of those "mountian men" "hillbillies" so I would say that falls under the "good" part of what I am looking for.
Thanks so much for your response.

That is good to know, I think cities like Idaho City like it that way, with no yuppies. And when I go out to the mountains I don't like seeing Hummers and Starbucks.

just from what i get on the news, there are a lot of pot busts there, and from my own experience, there is a sizable amount of pot heads up there. i don't know if that's good or bad for you, but something you may want to know about.
as far as cell phone goes, i highly doubt you could get service there, radio and TV are sort of limited. you do get radio and TV there, but not as much as you would in boise.
as far as working there, there isn't a whole lot as far as promising jobs go.
the town has a somewhat obvious division between the well off and the not so well off.
but typical of a small town they have a small town attitude, other than a few druggies, the only crime would be a few DUI's and some bar fights
someone already mentioned that the people aren't really hillbilly's but they are, well, small town folk and many don't really appreciate the big city lifestyle or the people that bring it there, as with much of idaho California is a 4 letter word, and it indeed is in idaho city.
many people either go to or through there in the summer to camp, so in the summer it is a pretty happening place, and some go around there to enjoy the snow. speaking of snow, the last few years there hasn't been much for snow, but in the usual winter several feet of snow is not uncommon. 4 Wheel drive is almost mandatory.

^The pot busts, aren't really in Idaho City, They are in Boise County, which is a huge county and the pot is grown in very remote areas. Ehh, oh well, it is what it is. Probaby good for the local economy if anything.

The pot heads in Idaho City are nothing to worry about, and yes there have been busts in Boise County this past year, but this is typical of areas in forest lands such as this area outside of Boise. This is the Northwest after all
I think the most important thing to realize about Idaho City is that it isn't your typical small town. It is a "living" old ghost/mining town and has that old rustic/historic look. It used to be the largest city in the Northwest back during the gold rush, so there is a lot of history there. It has a mix of new comers who work in Boise but want to live in the deep woods, and your typical "i'm a logger and that's ok" people. That area is starting to catch on with the rest of the growth in the Boise area. New more upscale housing developments are proposed and some under construction.
It is a beautiful drive from and to Boise.

Thanks for all the good info!
The pot thing is no problem with me. I live in Adams county Ohio now. Ohios largest pot growing county, so I know the type. If you don't bother them, they usually don't bother you. And if they do bother me, well......... I am probably just as much a redneck as they are, (hehehehe!) and probably twice their size!
I am looking at land for sale out of the town area actually. I am into wind and solar power. So the town thing aint much of a factor. It is just that it is where I will be doing my trading. I am self employed also.
I am moving to that area for the gold history. And also the Elk! mm,mm,good!
Where I live now the houses are about 1/4 mile apart and I am starting to feel like a sardine! I need to get out to the WIDE open spaces.
Anyone got any leads on some land out there? I have a few lined up to look at in the spring. I will be out there the first week of May.
Ken
