Default Jerome

We are planning a move soon and would appreciate your thoughts on Jerome. We are planning to retire.

I grew up there, although I haven't lived there for years. It's a bedroom community to Twin Falls, small, fairly quiet, strong Hispanic contingent (which has really grown since I left), strong LDS contingent.

I loved growing up there. I can answer specific questions, probably.

Gramz,

Anchorless is our resident pessimist, but if you ask him to elaborate he will give you more information in a "glass half empty" sort of way. But you may not want to discount his comments right away, since he normally has lots of informational resources from which he has formed his views.

In fact, to fully answer Gramz' questions...can you please elaborate on your dim view of this town?

Have you been to Jerome?

The northside of the Snake River Canyon is the center of Idaho's dairy industry. From outside of Bliss through Wendell to Jerome there are many, many dairies. For most of the year it smells like dairy - that's just the way it is. You get the smell and all that comes with the dairy industry.

I can't see the appeal to Jerome. I mean, it's close to Twin Falls, and it has a Walmart, and I'd imagine housing is cheap. But it's (generally speaking) a very poor community with little or no small town charm (nice downtown, nice tree lined streets, whatever). It's in the middle of the high desert, subject to winds, cooler weather than Twin Falls, and no scenic appeal.

If you're interested in the Magic Valley area but you're not so hot on Twin Falls, I'd check out Buhl, Kimberly, and Shoshone, and skip Jerome, Wendell, Bliss, and Filer.

And as far as citing informational sources, I have family in the entire Magic Valley, and I've spent a great deal of time there.

As a born and bred citizen of Jerome, Idaho, I couldn't help myself in commenting a bit about the good things that are happening here! Yes, I do agree that there is a bit of dairy smell around the area, but if you mix in the scent of the cheese plant, it's almost like smelling a cheeseburger all the time. Don't forget the newly updated waste water treatment plant that gives a whiff of the locale on breezy days. We have taco trucks on every corner, as well as a large variety of mexican bakeries, clothing stores, video stores, and bars. As wonderful as THAT all sounds, we do have several fast food restaraunts to treat yourself to, however no nice sit-down restaraunts with the exception of China Village and Idaho Pizza (by the way, MMMM MMMM MMM to those places...DO go there, I dare ya!). We just had 2 brand-new schools built, which took about 20 years to pass bonds to build, AND we are building a brand new senior-citizens center this year that only took one voting cycle to pass. Don't forget that we have the highest property taxes in the valley, that is because we are so much better than every other town in the valley. We have a Walmart here so there is always 24/7 entertainment. How could you STOP yourself from moving here, I wonder??
