Thumbs up The Deep Dark - ILA's Book of the Year

Hey ~ I hope you guys are all reading "The Deep Dark" by Gregg Olsen.

It won ILA's Book of the Year Award in October.
If you're not familiar with it, here's the scoop:

It is the true story of the Sunshine Mine Disaster in the Coeur D'Alene Mining District, in 1972. It was Idaho's 9-11 before the term 9-11 was even whispered. 91 men died. Two men walked out, but only after spending a week wandering underground and finding body after body of their co-workers.

"The Deep Dark" by Gregg Olsen is in paperback, so affordable as well as a great insight to the tragedy of the Sunshine Mine Disaster. It's available on Amazon.com, and should be in bookstores too.

I lived there then. The author did a great job of telling the families' stories.
Anyone else from the Silver Valley area remember the Sunshine Mine Disaster?

vintage is on a distinguished road
I remember. I don't have the heart to read the book. Such is the terrible price paid to get reformation in the practices of the mining companys.

Thumbs up thank u for your comment

Howdy Vintage ~ Thank you for leaving the message. You are my "first" response on the Idaho forums ~ Obviously, I'm a newbie here!

Had the same hesitation in getting myself to read this one. I was 11 years old when "it" happened, so The Deep Dark did help me fill some gaps that I couldn't have comprehended back then.

Did you lose family in that tragedy?
My family lost friends. Mom fed a lot of rescuers with the other Silver Valley women who gathered at Elk Creek school. Dad designed and implemented the landscaping for the memorial site statue.

The Deep Dark is really quite a nice tribute. I hope you will find you can enjoy it one day soon.

I didn't lose family but was tramatic for the whole State. I'm glad that the book is a good tribute to the families that were involved.
