ahh idaho, one massive state that can fit all of new england and thensome. I am stuck as to which region i should be looking at, and am hoping some natives can help me.

i am...

a diabetic so i need to be within a half hour to an hours drive to a hospital incase of ketosis (i can drive fine at .6 ketones, wont start heavily affecting me till 1.8-2.0 ketones)

pro hunting. I would like to be able to hunt to supplement food, as much as possible, if i can hunt all my meat its even better (due to personal ethics)

like ruralness, and dont like urban/suburban spread

want vast tracts of nothingness around me to explore/hunt/camp

dont like praries/desert, i like wide open spaces, but large endless tracts of nothing isnt good, i need trees/forest, stuff like this at the least http://static.panoramio.com/photos/1...0/41856775.jpg

not thing like this Panoramio - Photos by Michael Millward.

am neither conserverative, nore liberal, i am one for give me my land, my dog, my rights, and stay away, however i do lean slightly conserverative on most issues.

more to be added

To me it sounds like your looking for the same as I am and northern Idaho sounds like the place for you. Areas like outside of Sandpoint or Clark Fork, Priest River or even Bonners Ferry area.

Sandpoint has a hospital and I believe Bonners Ferry has one also, don't know the specifics on them though.

My and my wife are heading back up there next week to look at 9 different properties in the areas mentioned above. We will most likely make an offer on 1 if all goes well.

We went up there last Feb. just to what the area is like during the dead of winter but it was warm and raining, just like where we live in the Sierra's in Ca.....it's been warm winters for the last few years, I've not had to shovel snow for 3 years now.

Here are some options that are in or near small towns with little if any sprawl and also near a hospital.

I've included a lot of links to various landscapes around each town to kind of give you an idea. This area of Idaho, SouthEast, is rarely mentioned at this forum and there is a lot of beauty over there, it's rugged and has alot of wildlife. The Caribou-Targhee National Forest imo is one of Idaho's most scenic areas. There are mountains and valleys, pine forests and sage, rivers and lakes, hunting is popular. These areas are east and south of Pocatello. You could also google image search each of these areas and see a lot more photos.

Hope this helps.

Southeast Idaho Lodging, Recreation and Vacation Guide

Soda Springs in the southeast corner, has its own hospital and is also near Pocatello which has a few hospitals.

Preston, has its own hospital and is near other hospitals in Logan and even Pocatello.

wolfhelm, no response about the info I posted for you? Did you forget about this thread

I thought it would be helpful for you to see photos of an area of the state not talked about very often among the people in this chat room. I think a lot of newcomers to the state who aren't familiar with the state as a whole assume it is cut in half, trees in the panhandle and only desert in the much larger southern half of the state.

There are a lot of forested mountainous, non desert, areas in the southern half which includes some of the states most stunning scenery. There are a lot more areas I could have posted photo links for but it would have been too time consuming.

The Eastern side is defined by beautiful varied landscapes which rivals anything up north. Example, Idaho Falls to the Wyoming state line is beautiful with a lot of Aspen stands, Island Park and the Teton Valley, need I say more?, the Lost River Valley along the base of the Lost River Range is magnificent with views of Idaho's tallest mountains.

In SW Idaho, the forested landscape out Boise's back door stretching to central Idaho, the Heart of Idaho, offers primo world class Idaho scenery including the Sawtooths which defines what Idaho is to so many people.

Don't be swayed by the Snake River Plains which are also beautiful in their own right with mountains always in view, there is a lot more to Southern Idaho and this area of Idaho offers the most diverse ecosystems and landscapes in the state. You can visit an alpine mountain lake and a deep desert canyon all in the same day in Southern Idaho.

I don't know if he has had a chance to check them out, but I will be doing so. My family is looking for a place to retire to. We want mountains, hills, we both have to have hills around us. We don't want warm climate, temps in the high 80s or 90s in the summer (along with the high humidity), although we don't want two or three feet of snow either. If it gets to around 15 degrees in the daytime and (hopefully), not below -10 in the winter, we will be satisfied. What we are having a hard time with in our home area is the -10 in the daytime with wind chill factor of -20 and at night it drops to -40, sleet, sleet and more sleet instead of snow. And the high humidity in the summer.

Our son is Type I diabetic (genetic type) but he does a good job at keeping an eye on his sugar levels, counts carbs and such.

We aren't the partying type, we prefer to sit at home, enjoy time with each other. Hubby and son don't feel comfortable around people (the correct description is social phobic); they aren't rude, just tend to chat a little and then excuse themselves.

I am hoping we can find a place where we can sit on a porch and enjoy a beautiful sunset/sunrise. Breathe clean air instead of the smog from the plants and factories around our home. Stores close enough so we can pick up the needed supplies, maybe go out to dinner occasionally, but nothing fancy. We can drive an hour (although prefer less) if we need to get to the big stores, Target, Sam's Club and such.

The main problem I foresee us having is that he has Ohio Medicaid. I need to find out how we can get medical coverage for him so he can get his insulin.
Hubby has good insurance, retirement and will have his social security, but if we have to pay for his meds, can't get a medical card, then we won't be able to move there. And we HATE it here in Ohio. No family left, no reason to stay.

Anyhow I will check out the links.

****************************

I did a quick look at the photos and they are so beautiful, I really, really, hope we can at least visit, even if we can't move there.

I know that the hills where I live are puny compared to what you have in Idaho, but if you want to get an idea of a lake I used to visit a lot growing up and what we hope we can find, type in a search engine for Lake Vesuvius, Ironton Oh. It's about an hours drive from where we live now. I found some images on bing (search engine), but didn't see any taken in the wintertime. It is beautiful frozen, with the trees covered in snow.
