This was my corner of Idaho from 1977-1981. My wife and I lived in the tipi for two years (through the winters), until the bears started becoming a problem by getting into the tipi. Then I built the cabin. My middle son was born in the cabin in 1978. Our place was about 25 miles NE of Sandpoint on Upper Gold Creek Road. Sorry about the quality of the photos. They were stored in a box for years. Nikkormat FT-2 35mm. The pic of the cabin is in (rocky mtns are the marrow of the world ).

Default Mountains of Idaho

I was born and raised in the back country of Idaho where there was no electricity yet. The power company hadn't gotten out to some of the more remote farms & ranches. When I was a teenager I left the back country to live in the big city of Twin Falls, Idaho. One day a friend and I were fishing in nearby Hagerman, Idaho on some property posted "No Trespassing." Suddenly a man says "How's the fishin' boys?" and we knew we'd been caught trespassing. Anyway, it turned out to be Vardis Fisher and we were on his private property. Vardis Fisher is an Idaho author whose two main works were "The Mothers" about the Donner Party and his book "The Mountain Man" about Jeremiah Johnston. He had his property posted for privacy so he could write books there uninterrupted. He was very friendly and he wound up giving me a job doing odds & end stuff for him.

Years later because I knew and worked for Mr. Fisher he invited me to an early showing of the movie "Mountain Man" at the Egyptian Theater in Boise, Idaho. As a guest I received an original black & white photo from the movie company.

Anyway, as a young man I was deeply influenced by Vardis Fisher and his book "The Mountain Man" and I ended up living and working in Idaho's primitive/wilderness areas on horseback all my life. I'm 65 now and think, or at least hope I have a few years in the backcountry left in me. BTW, it was damn good trout fishing on Fisher's property.

Kindred spirits, both of you! Any friend of Del Gue and Vardis is a friend of mine! Thanks for the link to the old CO thread. We're crazy...we're embarking on the cabin adventure at the foot of the Cabinet Mts, and we're no spring chickens......We had the Jeremiah Johnson soundtrack running from our car stereo as we were cutting down the first trees...

It' a rather long and personal story that had nothing to do with not liking Idaho. We loved where we were living. We just had obligations to take care of back in Texas. Which we did. Then we divorced in 2000 and I got with a woman that I knew before I met my ex-wife. It took me a while to find her because I hadn't seen her in over 15 years. But I found her!!! We got together in 2002 and married in 2010. Over 40 years after we met. We went on vacation to Arkansas and I fell in love with the Mena area. We went back and bought a house in 2007 and have been here ever since. We can sit on our front porch with a cold glass of iced tea (or whatever) and see the second tallest mountain in Arkansas. It's not the Rockies. It's not the Cabinets. It's not the Selkirks, but it's ours. The Ouachita Mtns.

Good deal Bigbear2. It was a great area when we were there. I assume that it is still. I have a friend that is still there only he has moved to Hope. He sends me photos of his adventures. Good luck!!! I hope you do well. I hated to leave Idaho. My second and third sons were born there, one in the cabin and the other one in Spokane, so North Idaho will always be a part of my heart. It was the hardest, but most rewarding time of my life.

Slingshot, even the toughest mountain men came down from the mountain eventually (except of course Chris Lapp and Jeremiah...). Wonderful love story, we need more of those...Come over to the Porch thread and get a little North Idaho hit whenever you feel like it!

Saw your old cabin on the other thread, how cozy! We plan to have a tipi, too, away from our cabin--just for the visual pleasure of it. No good living in a tipi with bears around!

Nope!!! Bears can be a problem. We have'um here too. Up on the mountain. Only every once in a while here in town. When we were living in our tipi in Idaho a momma with two cubs came up to doorway of our tipi while I was in town. My wife was inside, and 6 months pregnant. She had no where to go. Luckily, they left. The next day I started the cabin. The photo of the bear turning to look at me had just been on our back porch. I'll check out the Porch thread.
