What is the deal with drivers in this state? I moved here from another state about a year and a half ago (Not someone buying up all the houses and land), and I am still trying to get used to the drivers out here.
I have noticed so many unsafe drivers it is ridiculous. In the shopping center parking lots, they are too impatient to wait their turn in line and before you know it, they make a sharp right, sharp left and barrel across the parking lot throught the seperate lanes diagonally. Any child (Adult for that matter) can come out from behind a car and be plowed pretty good. When they back out of their parking spaces they are supposed to notice and give right away to through traffic, but instead that back out fast, just daring you to keep moving. Why is a place like Idaho so full of impatience? Turning into parking lots or coming to cross streets, they take needless risks only to say I beat everyone, or just plain dumb as rocks aim their vehicles at your vehicle when coming around sharp turns. Where I come from we drove fast, but everyone new the rules of the road. Here, no respect for one another (not saying everyone). I live near a major cross section, stopped only by stop signs. I have seen at least six accidents there in the time I have lived here. On the highway they push on your rear and you are already exceeding the speed limit, and then they push you from the rear, pass, then get in front of you and slow down. It happens all the time. Never ceases to amaze me! |

Try living in an area of Idaho that they are totally cluless about four way stops and then the county adds roundabouts in place of the four way stops!

A lot of those impatient drivers are most likely new comers from larger cities who lose their cool in heavy traffic. But there are some people who just never get a clue when they drive.
If you want my opinion the worst drivers are those miserable souls from Utah. They are rude, pushy, constantly break the law by speeding, run over pedestrians, and .... (I can't type it ![]() |

I signed the complaint and they arrested him a day later for following too close and for driving without a license. If you ever saw a huge '85 White Crew Cab F350 diesel running around IF that was me, probably. I had a sticker in the back window that said "horn not working watch for finger". It was true too the horn didn't work, haha. I would rather put up with the roundabouts than the pooh flipping trucks here in Buhl. They are every where making the road slick with the pooh they slop out and they try to run you over any chance they get! |

I agree with Pineboy. I think most of the bad drivers are transplants.
All things considered, Idaho drivers really aren't that bad: http://www.cnn.com/2006/AUTOS/05/26/...ngs/index.html New York (state) drivers are the worst. |

I have been clean ever since and have had no accidents. My husband was born and raised in Shelley ID and he has more tickets than I can count. He has totalled more vehicles than what should be possible but he still drives. Most of the wrecked vehicles were farm related and the tickets all involve driving long haul. I drive the speed limits and what the conditions call for and I get flipped off and dirty looks from the Natives of Idaho. I leave early so I don't have to rush, don't tailgate and try not to get mad at the other drivers, which is why I stay home most of the time I have many stories about Idahoans that have had too many accidents and tickets and they were born and raised here. So please don't say that it is the "transplants" that are the problem.Oh yeah, my mom is 65 and has never ever had a ticket in her life and she grew up driving in Cali and still lives there & my dad has had 3 his whole life. |

Sorry -- didn't mean to imply that all native Idahoan drivers are wonderful and all non-native Idahoan drivers are bad.
All I can say, is that with the same cars and same coverage, my car insurance rates increased after I moved to Maine. They increased again after I moved to Georgia. I saw plenty of bad drivers in Idaho, but *in general* the drivers in Maine were worse, and the drivers in Georgia are even worse then the Mainers were. Atlanta drivers are a special kind of bad driver. It's a must to drive 75-85mph thru the middle of town. If you don't, you get run down by all the other crazies on the road. Lucky for me, I don't have to drive thru Atlanta that often. |

I've lived in Montana, Idaho, California, Illinois, Arizona, and Japan. There is absolutely NO truth to the notion that "people in X drive worse." It's complete nonsense. People love to tell stories to others as some sort bonding ritual. It's sociologically and psychologically interesting, but it's probably empirically false.

Funny, I can always tell when I'm in Idaho because the drivers are so much nicer. They don't ride your bumper, they don't dawdle in the fast lane, they don't act like the world's gonna end if someone gets ahead of them on the freeway.
But then, I live in Utah, where all of those things do happen, and it's like night and day when I drive to Idaho. It's a relief to drive in Idaho. So count your blessings! ;-) |
