Hello there!

I am very new at this. And I apologize in advance if I am in the wrong area. If any of you out there can answer my questions that would be helpful.
I am trying to do research on Idaho, for a possible move. I went to the CDC website and found that Idaho is the leader in west nile virus cases in the country ( by a large margin). I always thought that insects, mosquitoes were attracted to humid climates. Does Idaho get very humid in the summertime? Which part of Idaho is the most affected and do you know why?
Thank you in advance.

We are a very dry climate in SW Idaho where most cases happened. All mosquitoes are bad in my opinion, but the one you need to watch out for is the culex pipiens. This one can transmit WNV. They are found mostly in "perminate water areas". Mosquitoes in the culex genus have a "round butt" Other mosquitoes are considered nuisance mosquitoes by the mosquito abetment districts. The reason it was bad last year is, we had a great water year. Most flood irrigates. There is a huge bird population (the reservoir of blood).
I don't know if they have updated the CDC website but I was told that the # for the year will be 911 or 912 people infected total. I think the real # is 5000 or so, doctors stop reporting it to CDC after they think it's common and tell them go home and get some rest for a couple weeks.

In my opinion, your safe to move to Idaho. just make sure you buckle you and your kids up. we are still behind the times when it comes to that!

To TOP GUN:

Thank you so much for your reply! I appreciate it!
WOW! That is amazing!
When I looked at the web site it mentioned 800 plus cases, not 900 plus, while the rest of the country had numbers like 50, 100 or so, a big difference, and I always thought that areas such as Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, where you have water & humidity everywhere would be the most affected.
So I am surprised about Idaho's huge number of the west nile virus, as well as other critters.... According to your answer South West Idaho was the one affected by this. So , we should be Ok, and we will buckle up & drive carefully.
Thank you so much! :0)

I lived in Boise and every summer they used to spray for mosquitoes. There did get bad some times but there is a lot of water in the area also besides normal thing there is the swimming pools that are not taken care of or the yard ponds. It also surprised me to find that out all so. Being Idaho is normally dry not like the south.

The Eastern part of Idaho had the most cases, Bingham county the worst in the state (Blackfoot area) this is due much to the standing water that is held in irrigation areas. There have been several measures passed in this years elections to spray more heavily for the misquitoes in problem areas.
