Our home in CT is valued around 240k and we're getting taxed around 6800 a year on that to give you some perspective on how bad it could be. I am already salivating at the gigantic drop in taxes from the eventual move. Another ridiculous thing about CT is they tax your motor vehicles every year as if they're property. They take the NADA retail value of your vehicles and then apply the mil rate to 70% of the cost. In many cases there are people here paying more taxes on their freaking car alone each year than the entire property tax in Idaho.

With the exemption, what I pay in property taxes in unincorporated Bonner County (outside of Sandpoint) equates to about one half of 1% of what my house just appraised for during our refi. That's with all the school, fire, levy, library district, etc included.

I'm looking right now at my Idaho vehicle renewal notices. My Suburban tags are due. I do the 2-year renewal...which will set me back $60.50.

Renewing my ATV snowplow's street plates is $12, and renewing my ski boat is $39.50 which includes the $10 invasive species tag. These are 1-year renewals.

A 2008 Suburban would cost you 575 dollars every year here paid to your town as part of your "property". If you don't pay that when you go to register a new vehicle or renew your existing registration you're required to pay in full that amount before being able to do it. If you have two cars which most families have (sometimes more) well figure close to double that amount each year spent on cars.

This state (CT) used to not have this tax nor even an income tax until 1991. It just goes to show you how fast a state can go downhill if the wrong kind of people are there to be stewards in holding their elected officials accountable.

Why is your ski boat considered an invasive species?

They are trying to keep invasive species out of our Idaho lakes. Some sort of mollusk that's coming in on boats, so they have check stations set up and the tag pays for it.

That makes sense to me. I just figured the "invasive species" came around every summer for a few months and left just before the first snow fall.

Gee thanks--I've been called many things, but "invasive species" is a first!
