Red face thinking about moving. ... Emmett, ID

Hey there,
I am from Florida and I was considering moving to Emmett. I did check the city data info but it does not say anything about the people there. Are they friendly to new residents? I also heard alot of talk of racism in Idaho. Is that something to worry about?

While you might find that article to be an interesting synopse, it, unfortunately is NOT accurate at all, far from it in fact.

However, approximately 10 years or so ago there was a compound in northern Idaho that was torn down by the government after the leader (a white supremist) was arrested, tried AND convicted. Ever since, Idahoans (myself included) have been working diligently to rid our state of that tarnished label. Idaho is such a great state with so much to offer. As an Idahoan I would hate to think that we're still viewed as a white supremist state, especially when it is NOT (nor has it ever been) the majority of the Idaho population that was racist.

I hope someday that you're able to visit Idaho so you can see first hand what it's really like, and what the people are like (kind, friendly and politically correct.)

I live in Emmett and it is a very small community that I hate to leave (my husband's occupation is moving us to Arizona.)

I love many, MANY things about Emmett....But the people are what makes Emmett what it is, a friendly, kindhearted community. Just to give you a few examples as to the kindness of Emmett people; There's a coffee shop called Banducci's (it's great) that's owned by siblings (a brother & sister.) One time I went through their drive-thru and didn't have my checkbook with me like I thought I did and they simply said, "that's ok, you can come back and pay for it later on when you have it." They didn't ask for my name or anything (at that time I was NOT a "regular") it was only my second visit so they didn't know me from Adam! But I can tell you, after that I certainly became a regular!

Another example of the kind people here in Emmett. One week after we moved here our pump broke on the well (I can't remember exactly what was wrong with it) but when we called a business to get a replacement piece they gave us the piece and told us that we could pay them later (again, they had no idea who we were.)

It's the people in Emmett that I love, as well as the beauty of Emmett, the way it's nestled down into the valley. And talk about BEAUTIFUL sunsets! Truly breathtaking!

We have our property up for sale right now. We have six acres to romp around on and I just hate the thought of leaving....I'm really going to miss it.

As an ex Idaho person I have to fully agree with only the first half of that story the rest is all bull! The first half really dose say what I have become to believe Idaho is! A state trying to recover funds lost because the federal government with holds them to force Idaho to become politically correct. .I know this as I got to live in the cross fire of politically correctness that destroyed my life! Idaho dose not even come close to fallowing there own laws! What I see now days is a californing of Idaho and the now idacalif liberals that seam to be taking over and distorting and destroying what Idaho was. Thank God I do not live there any more or I would have no life because of Idaho!!!!

Default racists in emmett

I can only tell you my experiances in Emmett. As a single woman of mixed racial heritage I can tell you I was treated horibly in Emmett. My home was repeatedly robbed, I was threatened and assulted. One man told me I was less then nothing because I was not one thing or the other and I should just be put in a ditch and shot. I suspect the only people who will tell you they are not racist in Emmett are white people.

I am white and I never saw any thing like this happen personal. I did here lots of talk about things of this nature. I know that some like the compound are gone but I do not for one bit believe that every one of this mind thought has left Idaho and nor do I believe it is only in the north . I also remember the KKK and white supremacy distributing papers around town in Boise. Boise is the most diversified city in the state and I believe it is still over 90% white. To my mind that is not diversified at all. I also believe that any one who thinks or acts like they are better or that they deserve things because of there race, color or religion are all the same. That is predigest! It can be against some thing or one or I deserve because of this or that . To me predigest is ugly no matter how you try to color or justify it. As a white male I also know what reverse predigest is. To me every one has faced it some were some time in there life ether against them or against some one other. It also is not only based on race and the other things, but also male and female . Look at domestic violence. How many news paper adds, TV adds, magazine adds have you or do you see as any thing but woman and child as the victims and the male as the abusser? Ever here of a shelter for an abused man? How about a help phone number for men that have been abused? I know that there are also men victims and that some adults male and female are the victims of kids. The media and others want people to believe it is only woman and kids that are the victims. This to is predigest but it is accepted in society. This is just as sad as slavery was many years ago or other things such as the treatment of Native Americans, the Irish, and others. I am a victim of domestic violence and Idaho ignored it!!!! Even with it starting them in the face . Same as my nephew in another state who was stabbed in the back by his now ex and nothing was done about it! Even when he went to the E.R . This is some thing that needs to be changed starting in our own back yards as every one can be a victim or the abuser, discriminated against or be the disseminator. even the cops fall into one or the other groups on the job or off it .
okay I will get off my soap box now

Default Relocating to Emmett

We've been here for 3 months. I can't really speak to the question of racism, since I am white I probably wouldn't encounter it. Are people friendly here - well, on the surface, yes. The stories of the merchants in town being welcoming and extremely customer friendly, yes, that's true.

People are relaxed here (to the point that it can take some time to conduct business, be prepared for that!). We have found, though, that deep down it appears that people are not overly welcoming to newcomers. We live in a relatively new subdivision, with new neighbors, and people will wave and say "hi" but that's about the extent of their interaction.

Our teenage son is a polite, well dressed kid who also happens to have shoulder length hair and that is a BIG deal with more than a few residents here. He's had enought comments about "when are you gonna cut your hair and take out the earring" that it's started to bother me, too. These are adults saying this to him - my question is why does it bother them so much. The teenagers here are not friendly, so if you have kids of that age, it will take quite a while for them to find their niche.

It is a beautiful town to live in, but if I had to do it over, I would have chosen differently, I think.

Donna

It will never cease to amaze how there are always those who can make an issue over meaningless trivia, some would probably tell you Einstein's theories can't be right because he needed a haircut. This kind of intolerance scares me more than talk of crime rates.

Where did you relocate from?

When you say you would have chosen differently do you mean a different town or state?

We came from a semi-small town outside of San Diego. Our kids would have never been able to afford a home in San Diego County. There are now 3 million people in SD County and it's changed a lot in the 45 years I lived there.

I love Idaho and especially Boise. What a great city!

I know I'm judging things here too quickly, give me a few months and perhaps I'll feel more at home. I guess I think if I'd moved to a larger town in the Boise area that more people would equal more differences among them and more openess. However, I take heart in that I've seen a couple of boys in downtown Emmett with very long hair, so perhaps the culture will change with their hairstyles
