The Frank Church is the largest wilderness area in the lower 48 states, over 2 million acres. Many people go hunting there and cross country skiing. We have so many open areas to the river where there are no houses at all, the Salmon River is quite long you can drive for miles toward Northfork and see nothing but river and trees. We are very isolated here, so that should give you an idea on how wide open our spaces are. I included a link that will give you info on trails and camping also, Salmon Area | Idaho Camping Sites
If you need any more info feel free to let me know.

Default Frank Church

I don't believe you need a permit, except to fly, in or use a boat while there. There are camping fees to camp there, but the only permits I know of are the normal hunting license and tags. You could contact the BLM, or a local outfitter, and they can fill you in on the regulations, at Your Premier outfitter in Idaho’s unit 27 in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.. Hope this helps.

Default Also Curious about Salmon, ID

Hi,
My family is thinking about moving to Idaho and we've been checking out info on Salmon and the surrounding area.
I'm wondering about cost of living: Utilities, groceries, gas, etc...
Also if there are any homeschooling families, groups in Salmon or nearby?
Any info is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Thanks for the link. I have actually done a lot of searching and have looked at that website(s) already. Nothing comes up for Salmon, as far as homeschoolers.
Hoping to find out if there are any there or nearby support groups.
Thank you.

Hey All,
There are a lot of Home schooling here, because some of the parents who live north of town in Northfork or near Shoup don't bus their kids this far, the local High School can hook you up with the Association for homeschool. As far as cost of living we are generally lower than the national average, we get drug thru the mud on gas prices lol, but we think it's a small price to pay. The only disadvantage Salmon has is the job market is almost nill, the only manufacturing is QB, they make commercial beams, has over half the staff laid off, so if you do not have a job set up before coming here, I would reconsider moving to Salmon. We have been blessed that my husband is a journeyman and was able to land a position. Sometime in the summer the cobalt mine will be opening near Williams Lake, but from what I have read they plan to hire Lemhi and Custer county residents only. But you might look into skilled positions you could fill, I believe you can search Cobalt Mine Project and find some info. Our grocery prices are pretty fair, and utilities ,I couldn't tell you about city water and sewer bills, we don't pay that, but we have a seasonal rate on electric, it's a little cheaper in the fall thru spring than summer, but we run all electric plus our tree this christmas and our bill was 150. So hopefully this helps , if not pm me with further questions and I will do my best. Best of luck to you, and welcome.
Beth

Hi
I am planning to move to Idaho within the next 9 months. I am looking at the Salmon area and wondered if someone would help me.

I wanted to know about the winter roads. How are they to travel on? If I had to travel to other towns or cities, what would it be like? I think we have more snow here in SW Michigan as we average 20 inches per month.

I am planning to move my custom window treatment/sewing business there and also farming. Are there any small farms in that area to rent?

I have done a lot of research, but feel it is best to get advice from the locals.
Thanks

Hi spees5490,

With your custom window treatment/sewing business, is the US Mail or UPS adequate enough for you? Not sure if FedEx Ground transports to and from Salmon. There are always farms to rent, but do you mean 40 acres, 150 acres - what is small to you? If you plan on growing any crops, do you have the farm equipment already?

I like your comparision of Idaho to Michigan. Everything is relative. Some people complain about the weather in ID having never seen a winter in MI, WI, or other states U.S. Idaho has such an unusual border on the eastern side that all types of weather are possible.

You may get more direct weather information about Salmon weather from radio stations in Salmon, and/or Butte or Bozeman, MT. MT television stations serving the Butte and Bozeman area may have info too.

MI offers many opportunities for higher education. Despite the temperature or snowfall in MI, dozens of physicians, dentists, and other professionals, who have completed an internships/ residencies/ or fellowships in MI, WI, IL, OH etc. prior to moving to eastern ID to practice. In the WY thread, it is well documented how many people have moved from MI to WY for a JOB.

Everything is relative, IMHO.

Good luck in finding the additional info you need. You may get some information by posting in the MT thread, if you haven't already. Just ask for those who are in southern MT near Salmon.
