I happenned upon the town ordinances for the town I am moving to and discovered that there is a rule on the books forbidding more than 2 dogs per household. Anyone know what this is about? Can they do that?

Not sure but I think they can - even where you have acreage, some towns limit pets to 2 or 3 but it varies from town to town - it's definitely something you want to check out beforehand though, if you have more than 2 (although you may be able to get a 'kennel license', not sure what that entails though, the cost etc). We live in Cambridge right now and there is a three dog limit per house hold. Will be the same when we do get moved to Midvale. After three a kennel license is required. I do not think puppies count as long as they find homes when they come of age. I wonder if there are circumstances where a person could get a variance?

Well, I'm not going to get many fans here. After having been involved in animal rescue for several years I can tell you I am a fan of this law.
Too many people would get "disposable dogs". Get 'em when they are cute pups and banish them to the yard when they got older and not so cute. My male that I rescued is one of those..... he was found frozen to the ground on a chain in 2002 (Christmas Eve), without food, water or shelter. The vet didn't think he would make it that night.
Don't get me wrong, there are exceptions to every rule. In fact I have a friend who has 6 dogs
Most often, at least in my area, nothing is done unless there have been complaints from neighbors about noise or dogs running at large.

It's not uncommon to have a dog restriction for city limits. If you want more than that I have heard you have to get a kennel license?

I also know many people who had 3 dogs....... 2 small and 1 large and nobody said anything about it because they took care of their dogs and they were not a nusense!

I understand why folks would not want out of control dogs or owners, just was taken aback by such a relatively intrusive law.
I only have one dog, have such a big place have considered doing rescue when we move, will just have to seek a kennel license if we want to move forward, and hope there is a fair and logical approval process in a very very small town.
