Coeur d'Alene Ironman Triathlon: June 22, 2008
Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene Triathlon
I have a friend competing and I will be attending. I've heard about the one in Hawaii, and have been awed by this level of competition. He's been training for 2 years for this...we'll see how it goes...

Hey Sage,
this year's water temps are going be a several degrees below normal o account of the large snow pack and late melt. Hopefully, your friend can make the necessary adjustments in race preparation and logistics.
Enjoy yourself!! Always a treat!

He's from the SF Bay Area and does his swims in the ocean water in that area (I think Santa Cruz area). So he's used to "cold water" (compared to SoCal or Hawaii), but not THIS cold, for sure. I'll tell him to be ready...

Santa Cruz temps are about 58*F. Ocean swimming is much tougher than lake swimming. When the English Channel swimmers swim, they get all greased up to protect against the chill, which is actually warmer (57*F to 67*F) than the Central Coast of California around this time of year. Temps this time last year was 58*F and warmed to above 65*F by race day. Worst case scenario is a wet suit or some technical wet suit that is less bulky.
But lucky guy to be training and competing in such beautiful areas. I certainly do not take for granted my good fortune to be in an area so blessed by nature's artistry!
