Default What is the Preston area like?

I was born in Idaho but spent most of my life in Utah. My husband and I were actually looking for land to buy in the Logan, Utah area but stumbled across acreage for sale in the Preston area and then we discovered that was Napoleon Dynamite country (lol - that is beside the point). We are looking to homestead in the area (I know - it sounds so last centuary) and need some info about the little towns out and around Preston. We're probably crazy - but we're environmentalists at heart, love the great outdoors, keep to ourselves and want to live lightly on the land. We've been researching and researching and researching and will hopefully be up there before or after the Napoleon Dynamite festival (I don't know - but the thought of a lot of Dynamite fans in one area is a little eerie) to take a look around.
I'd love to hear from some locals and their advise and opinion and get a 'feel' for the area. I know small towns have a tendancy to be cliqueish and we're not much of extroverts ourselves.
I work from home and my husband is entertaining the idea of a job transfer to Logan. What can we expect if we purchase land and try to homestead in that area? Are the locals friendly? How big is Preston exactly (Please don't tell me they have a Walmart - a.k.a. the evil empire)? Is the climate condusive to planting orchards or vineyards, or berry patches or whatever??
Please let me know anything and everything about the area. By the way - what is the predominate religion there?

Default Perspective from our family that recently moved to Preston

My husband and I recently moved to Preston in the summer of 2008. We came from the Chicago area, though we are both originally from the Idaho/Utah area. He was hired by the hospital as a family medicine physician. I am a homemaker with four young children.

Concerning our Preston experience...we absolutely love it. We have lived here just under a year and we could not be happier. From before our arrival to the present time we could not be more pleased with our neighbors and all whom we meet. People here are exceptionally friendly and helpful, without looking for some hidden reward in their good deeds. The schools are as good if not better as those we experienced outside of St. Louis and Chicago. There are not as many restaurants but Logan is only 1/2 an hour away. The benefits of this unique rural lifestyle greatly out weigh anything that the larger city amenities may appear to offer. Among the features we most enjoy, the lack of traffic surely is at the top of our list. And everything is so close.

Great small but well suited businesses for our needs, enjoyable restaraunts, a fantastic gym, excellent schools, and outstanding hospital, and most of all, incredible people, contribute to our desire to be here for a very, very long time.
