Concealed Weapons Permits in Idaho (Boise: crime, school, university)

Yesterday I called the Bingham County Sheriff's office, where the clerk insisted that there are no training requirements to obtain a CWP in Idaho.

Then I called the Bonneville County Sheriff's office, where the clerk insisted that there are training requirements to obtain a CWP in Idaho, although she could not name the required course nor direct me to it's provider.

Since these applications are processed in Boise, it strikes me as unlikely that both clerks are providing accurate information.

Anyone know which clerk is giving me the right answer?

I also found the Upper Snake River NRA, a group which offers classes (spudguns.net) but their schedule is somewhat limited. Anyone know of other groups in the area which offer formal firearms training.

The code reads as though it is up to the individual jurisdictions whether or not they require a certificate.

(13) When issuing a license pursuant to this section, the sheriff may
require the applicant to demonstrate familiarity with a firearm and shall
accept any of the following, provided the applicant may select which one:
(a) Completion of any hunter education or hunter safety course approved
by the department of fish and game or a similar agency of another state;
or
(b) Completion of any national rifle association firearms safety or
training course, or any national rifle association hunter education
course; or
(c) Completion of any firearms safety or training course or class
available to the general public offered by a law enforcement agency,
community college, college, university, or private or public institution
or organization or firearms training school, utilizing instructors
certified by the national rifle association or the Idaho state police; or
(d) Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety or training course
or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or
any division or subdivision of a law enforcement agency or security
enforcement agency; or
(e) Presents evidence or equivalent experience with a firearm through
participation in organized shooting competition or military service; or
(f) Is licensed or has been licensed to carry a firearm in this state or
a county or municipality, unless the license has been revoked for cause;
or
(g) Completion of any firearms training or training or safety course or
class conducted by a state certified or national rifle association
certified firearms instructor.

Norcalmom, If IM not mistaken even a hunter safety course will suffice for a CWP, and those classes should be available just about anywhere.. The one clerk may be confused with the open carry law, which means as long as the firearm is in open view its legal to carry without a permit.. Idaho has about the most liberal gun laws in the country which is another big factor for me moving to Idaho. One can even obtain a class 3 license in Idaho..

The funny part is, you really dont need to go strapped in Idaho because the crime is low for the most part.. The cities and states with the worst crime usually wont let you carry or even own a gun. Its pretty lame since its proven that more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens equals lower crime.. Go figure..

The local Fish and Game office has no courses until next year, field days for online courses are all filled, Upper Snake River NRA has no applicable courses until next year. The good news, one local cop has verified it is by jurisdiction and the Secretary of the Sheriff to whom I spoke would indeed know what she is talking about. I have a "personal trainer" but they are not licensed as such, maybe he can go with me to apply. Any other ideas?

This site has the gun laws and CCW requirements for each state. It will also tell you which states have reciprocity to your state.

NM, did you look into local gun shops, ranges, and sporting goods stores? Often they will offer training for CCW, and or Hunters Safety. Might be worth looking into.
When I was a kid, I took hunters safety at the local K-mart. It seems like there should be something within driving distance from you. But then again, I dont know where you actually are;-) Sorry I cant be of more help.
