Average summer temp is in the 80's. Right now we're just hitting the low 70's. Most winters we're in the 20's for Dec-Jan; overnight temps in the teens.
Snow varies from year to year. About every fourth year we get a heavy snowfall, so 6" or so will sit around for a few weeks. Most years, we get an inch or two every week or so & it melts in between.

What are you planning to do here for employment?

This is a nice rural area. Cheap real estate is still available. Email me if you want more specifics.

I would only be looking for part time employment. I am eligible for retirement in Jan. 2008 and would love to have a house again. Renting in California is the pits and I cannot afford a house. As long as I don't have to "shovel" snow I would be fine. LOL Thanks for the information. Is there a movie theater, shopping, grocery store etc. near by? Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it.

Rupert has two great grocery stores, half a dozen restaurants - everything from Subway to steaks to Mexican and Chinese and Alaskan Salmon (flown in). Furniture stores, fabric store, video rental available at one of the grocery stores, a couple variety stores. Burley - about 10 miles - has Walmart & a bunch more grocery stores (Alberstons and some private ones) plus a 5-plex movie theatre & another older cheap movie theatre.
The main "downtown" area of Rupert is built around a park square, with fountain and old-time band gazebo. The city is celebrating the 100th anniversary this year. If you can get up here around the 4th of July, you'll see the old-fashioned small-town friendliness in action. They celebrate for 5 days, with every civic organization & church having a booth around the park selling homemade foods. Everybody wanders around & visits. There are activities in the gazebo, entertainment etc, for 5 days & evenings. Another time when this sort of gathering happens is during the Relay for Life (cancer fundraiser) when the whole town turns out around the square, and also the day after Thanksgiving.
Housing is cheap here still. 3 bdrms under 100k. Acreage out in the country plus 4 bdrm house for 150 k. 5 bdrms + 5 acres on the river for 200k.
I can't promise you employment, though; that's the down side. There's not a lot available here unless you're medical or teacher. Agriculture is the big thing here, and the factories that process the food, but a couple of them have been closing down the last few years. That's one reason housing is a buyer's market.
Great recreation opportunities abound: ski resort half an hour away, fishing & boating on the river, rockclimbing 45 minutes away at City of Rocks National Park. Etc etc
Beautiful scenery: mountains to the north & south. Trees planted all over the town & countryside. Desert if you want real solitude, about 10 miles out of town.
What else would you like to know?

PS Just out of curiosity: why have you zeroed in on Rupert?

How could you forget to mention the "show and shine" boat show coming up the 23rd of June, the Friday night before the Idaho Regatta in Burley. Lots and lots if beautiful INBOARD race boats come to Rupert to give the race fans an "up close and personal" experience before the races on Saturday. Maybe even some blown Ks making it a night of thunder on the streets of Rupert...........After you move there, remember the Burley Regatta is ALWAYS the last weekend in June, every year..........Ray

Man, I miss Rupert. It's been a while so maybe it's not the same but I used to have so much fun there. Fishing, hunting, the farms.....maybe someday again.
