Just throwing in my 2 cents since I grew up in SE Idaho (potato country), have spent a lot of time in N. Idaho (Sandpoint) where my in-laws live, and currently reside in Boise/Meridian.

As for fleas, you'll be hard pressed to find any on your animals here. It gets too cold during the winter for them to survive any length of time. When I lived in Seattle, however, it was terrible... but I digress. You'll want to keep an eye out for ticks, though, no matter what part of the state you decide to settle.

SE Idaho can be quite beautiful in places, but I have to confess that it isn't my favorite place to live. I think it's because I was the only non Mormon in the entire area, and it wasn't easy growing up. As for weather, think wind and lots of it. So think snow + wind = blowing and drifting mayhem. Year round, you'll want to stock up on hair spray and keep a brush in your purse at all times. LOL

N. Idaho in my opinion is God's country. I'd live up there in a heartbeat, but the wages don't line up with the cost of living. As someone else posted, the real estate up there has skyrocketed due to a lot of development for people from other states moving in. Right now, they're getting socked in with snow... it's beautiful!!

Another part of North Idaho you might like is Moscow. The terrain is beautiful rolling green and yellow hills with a smattering of trees throughout. I went to school there (U of I), so it's definitely a college town, but gorgeous nonethelsess.

As for Boise, it is also beautiful, but in a different way. We sit in a valley with forest to the North, and desert to the south. We have one large established winery further south, and a bunch of start ups sprinkled around the open areas. Boise is kind of considered to be a white-collar town with high-tech industries in place. With that said, there have been a lot of lay-offs at HP, Micron, MPC, not to mention the ones who have just plain gone under. Just give Monster.com a look to see what is being offered in your field right now to get a better idea of what to expect.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
