Our Emmett Dream
Ok I am 10 months away from retirement after 35 years with my company.
With the economy doing wierd stuff should we follow our dream and move to Emmett Idaho, buy our little house and live life.
Or should I stay at my present company and wait for life to pass me by worrying about the stock market???
I'm 55, that's damn near dead . I need to do something soon...
As you can tell I have been ready to Bug out of California for 10 years now.
Help me old wise ones ???? Does my plan make sense???
I admit I am getting scared now with all this economy down turn BS.
Should I retire from a good Job while the rest of America wallows in fear?
Should I follow our dream of moving to Emmett and see my kids in better schools and better enviroment than we now live in?
I want to be a part time school bus driver.
I like the retired idea but who's got a crystal ball ???

Rent first if you move that way you not locked in to a purchase and then come down with a case of movers remorse ! What's so special about Emmett ? Why not St. Maries or Salmon, or Coure D' Alene ?

It sounds like you have made the choice, I would suggest you follow your gut buddy. I've been wanting this for 10 years too, and I just cant be happy in Calif. I cant give you any sort of feel good prophecy, but consider not so long ago people packed everything they had in a wagon and set out across the land to find home. I myself want to be there while I'm still young enough to enjoy it, and IM sure you feel the same. Consider the life you will give your kids there compared to what they will see here in the next 10 years, and then like I said follow yout gut instinct..
Much luck to you, and I hope everything works out well for you and yours no matter what.

The sun actually shines in Emmett and I ride motorcycles.
Close to Boise when I need a triple bypass.
Wife is artzy craftzy and all kinds of stuff for her in Boise.
Friends near by so we actually know nice people..
I want to grow Cherry trees

Here's my take....if your retirement income is reliable, then by all means, do it. It's so worth it to live a better life. If inflation gets worse, and your retirement has no COLA, it could get tighter, but you can plan for it...

Sage thats just it.
Were coming up because life is short.
5 years retired with my kids and Mrs will be a dream come true.
After that I might need a part time job for my sanity
Lets meet someday and ride some trails.

Here's my opinion - making a major life change like moving to Idaho (or whatever - fill in the blank) is kind of like planning to have children - the time is never right, you just do it. The trick is to look at your situation, keep your head down and make it happen. There is always something terrible going on in the world. Work around it.
Invite us over for a potluck. I want to see your new place!

Ruby, I couldn't have said that better myself. When we were contemplating moving here we had thoughts/fears; should we wait as his grandmother was aging, then gee one of the boys was getting ready to graduate high school and two years later the other one would be.... the list goes on. Had we waited until everyone else's life changing events happened we wouldn't have beenliving our life.

Sounds like you've made the decision to move, at this time you could probably get some good deals on your cherry orchard in Emmett...personally I love Emmett myself and would love to do the same thing you are thinking about..everytime I go up there to pick cherries or apples I check out what properties are for sale there, acreage and such..I've talked to a few of the orchard owners there and commom concern is that those orchards are being bought up for subdivision and the orchards are becoming fewer there...which would be a shame. Believe me I understand your appeal for Emmett living! As another reader posted there is never the "perfect" timing for a move, you should make a list of the pros and cons and decide what is in the best interest for you and your family...take a trip if you can, check out the Emmett website.

Hey I live in Emmett love it here! I would say to wait until spring. To see what the economy is going to do.
Get on the internet and look for homes sounds like you want some acreage I have a FANTASTIC Realtor that lives in Homedale and has farmed knows about acreages and water rights, irrigation etc.
I could give you his name if you like. He is no pressure and actually will tell you if a property is worth the price or not and to keep looking he is more interested in you finding what you want than a commission.
There are some really good deals out here right now but will probably be there in the spring as well it slows down her in the winter months.
It is a warm friendly town. good ole time folk kind of town. Lots of farmers here.
