Default Finally moving to ID

I finally talked my wife into moving to Idaho next year as we have both grown tired of the complete political mismanagement of California. I've never uprooted like this before and am sort of apprehensive. I have so many questions, but I don't know anyone in Idaho to answer them.

Which places have the best job markets? I will do anything basically, but need to be close to a P.O.S.T. Academy as I desire to become a Police Officer in the near future and my wife is a Registered Dental Assistant(California registered).

I grew up in a small town and my wife has always been a city dweller, but she grew up riding horses(go figure), so my dilemma is that I would like to live in a rural area but not too far from a city with a major airport(1-2 hours drive max). Which places would I need to focus my search for housing on?

I am also looking for a town that leans strongly towards individualism and freedom in the Constitutional sense. I have lived under the heavy hand of the state my entire life and I could go for a little freedom now that I have turned 30. Any other advice or comment is welcome and I cannot wait to be posting in here as an Idaho resident rather than an unhappy Californian.

Oh, and can anyone let me know what are the most popular websites used for job posting in Idaho?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

ST11, you sound just like me.. I was born in So Cal. and this is no longer my home, and hasnt been for quite some time. I live where you can be fined for "stockpiling wood", or smoking a cigar on a frikkin lake out in the OPEN.. I wont even go into the politics, taxes, immigration, and many other things that are pushing people like us out.

We have wanted to move for many years, but we finally bought 25 acres in North Idaho.. We hope to be moved by summer 09 if not sooner, but we still have a few loose ends to tie up before we leave. I think given the parameters you layed out North Idaho or Boise would be great for you.
Anywhere within driving distance of Coeur d"Alene/Spokane would fit the bill for employment.
Places like Post Falls, Hayden, Rathrdrum, Plummer/Worley, and even Sandpoint are close enough to commute especially compared to Calif. You can find land, be away from lots of people and have animals, but still close enough to jump on a plane, be a Cop, or get a great dinner in CDA, Spokane and surrounding communities.

Boise, and areas like Idaho falls, Twin falls etc are also great, but in all my travels North Idaho just seems perfect to me. So much to do, stunning beauty, nice people, reasonable prices, and FREEDOM were all big factors for me. Wherever you chose Im sure you will love it, and I wish you good luck on your search!

Thanks! I was looking at Hauser(sp.?) north of Post Falls and west of Rathdrum. I know how you feel. I was born in San Diego, but grew up near Redding. I now live in Sacramento and I have to call a special phone number to find out if the county will allow me to burn wood in my fireplace...every day. Don't even get me started on the gun laws. I can't even get a CCW permit in Sacramento county unless I am a current or former police officer. I will continue looking in north Idaho. It's good to hear that I'm not the only one fed up with California. I love the state, it's beautiful and all that...but its been ruined by people and politics. Yea...north Idaho looks like the most promising area. Though I also like the areas east of Moscow, Idaho(from what I have read), but job prospects have to take top priority. Thanks again!

Uuuuh we're gonna have to hang out I think.. Yeah gun and soon to be knife laws are a BIG part of my reasons for leaving as well. I make custom knives, and have already technically broken laws I didnt even know exsisted!! Im fully fed up with the constant BS here. Heck you cant even ride an ATV around here anymore. If its fun its illegal or gonna CO$T ya.. You dont even realize the freedoms we've lost until you go to a place where there is still FREEDOM! I about fell over when I found out we could actually use REAL fireworks on the 4th!!lol!

BTW Hauser is great, you will love it there.. Anywhere around that whole area for quite a ways, its all incredible and would be a great place to live!

awesome! I will have to make plans to go on vacation next Spring up in that area to check it out. I just hope it works out so I can get up there before next winter...otherwise it would be 2010 before I get there. It all comes down to finding a job I suppose...

Trace is right, why should I be surprised? I'm not thinking SE Idaho would be would your looking for employment wise... big crimes here; cow tipping Naw, there are a few more serious than that, however if you want I can go into more detail as to not in a DM if you wish.

Boise and northern Idaho tend be growing at a fast clip and more likely a need for both you and your wife's career paths.

Question: when you say major airport, you are taking about something more than where the cropdusters hit right? Not certain about N Idaho, but down here most flights are done by Delta, puddle jumpers that some folks fly down to SLC and then onward. Still haven't figured that one out the flights here would drop if folks would use the airport more often than not.

By the way, I want to know what took you and Trace so long in deciding to leave there? I bailed close to 20 years ago

You do want to check out Trace's craftmanship, I love glancing at his website

Thanks CM! For us, we have wanted to move for a long time but issues with family, health and insurance, kid in HS(taking college classes too), funds, etc etc, yada yada have kept us here. We are close now though, and it will make us appreciate it even more when we are there I think. Some day when Im in your locale we will have to get a cup of Joe, and I can go into more detail, but believe me if I could be there I would have been there MANY moons ago..

BTW CM in NID people use the International airport in Spokane Wa. which is just a hop skip and a jump away.

"cow tipping Cleosmom you be so badddddddddddddddd Hehehehe

ST 11 Can't help you here in Midvale. We do have one of those little puddle jumping airports here and we are a little less then 2 hours from Boise and airport there. Not sure of any P.O.S.T. We are about the most non governmental town around.

I think some times in Boise there are some air alerts where wood burning is banned. We hear it on the news once in awhile. There are times of inversions. Like Sacto used to have when we were there. So cold and damp. Even cold and damp here is better than there. Not quite as bone chilling.

Can not blame you for wanting out of Sacto. Been there done that about 23 years ago. Was a good move and we moved then to Clayton. Population 32 then but I think it has grown to 49 or maybe more.

Best of luck in where ever you decide.

Chris
