Aside from the race stuff, all good posts on this. I will agree lower housing in California is probably a strong reason.
And yes, population-wise, Idaho is growing and will continue to.
Idaho has not been hit by the bad economy as most States. Eastern Idaho (Idaho Falls, especially) has among the lowest unemployment in the U.S.

We still can't wait to move to Idaho. My shaved head and cute children will blend in naturally with my new surroundings.
I am very sorry to read of people having to leave their dream homes to get a job.
I am leaving a dream job just to get to Idaho. I could stay here and work for a longer period of time or I can retire early and spend some quality time with my family and spend a bit less.
It's time for us to downsize and be happy with what we have.
What we need is Health, family and a nice home in Emmett:

It should be noted that this migration study is just households moved by Atlas Van Lines. Not sure it is completely scientific. In fact, United Van Lines shows more people moving into Idaho than out in 2008.

A slow steady growth is a healthy growth. The states that saw rapid growth are the ones taking the biggest economic hit, right now. CA...well they are in a class all their own. I wonder how long it's going to take that state to bankrupt and if it does, I wonder how long it will be before they do it again.

Maybe it's because Sarah Palin hails from there!
JUST KIDDING.
I may not think Nazis as one poster on the first page said, but I do think Mormons. What I really think of when I think of Idaho is its beauty. I went to visit a childhood friend in Spokane WA. From there, I drove to Calgary AB, taking I-90 east to Coeur d'Alene and then going north through Sandpoint and Bonner's Ferry, and on up to the Canadian border. Beautiful, but none of the metro areas are large enough in population to suit me at this point in my life.

Good someone pointed that out, however this is the first time in around 20 years this company has seen more people leave. That is significant, jobs are evaporating too, I'm glad I still have mine.
It's good our real estate didn't bubble as bad as many other markets, thus hasn't deflated as bad either.
On a side note... wasn't Boise in the Forbes top 10 places to be for the last few years?... now it's one of the worst markets in their eyes ... whatever.

Personally, I don't put much stock in a study by a moving company I didn't use, and which doesn't seem familiar from my perusal of the moving forum on this site. I processed 7 new employees today, half of them had out of state ID's.

Go Penske.
They were the best bet even with drop off out of state. Funny thing, they don't have a drop off in SE Idaho, but I saw alot of other Penske trucks on the way here, in this area, and still do. Maybe Atlas is trying to make excuses to their investors?

This seems flawed and not really news worthy because Idaho is still one of the 10 fastest growing states according to the national census and our growth is from newcomers and not newborns. I don't doubt some people have moved out, people move in and out of every state every day of the year, but Idaho is still growing and will continue as people are looking for a better place to live and as they look for a state with kick ass quality of life such as Idaho has. Just think of all of the people in California and other overcrowded beat down states that want to escape as soon as the economy picks up, and a lot of them are already looking at Idaho.
This past week my employer has received 20 applications from people outside of Idaho wanting to relocate to Boise. And yes there are companies in Boise during these hard economic times which are currently hiring and pay well, you just have to be in the "know".
