Not sure where you're coming from, but considering the places where I visit family in California and where I live in Southeast Idaho, the crime is considerably less here in Idaho.
We do have crime only not so much in the severity that I've witnessed elsewhere. We do have the blue skies here in Idaho. Last time I was out to CA, I don't even recall being able to see the stars at night.
The economy everywhere has taken a hit. If you're considering moving to any of the places you listed, you'll want to make certain you're gainfully employed first. Jobs aren't easy to come by in our area.
Snow? We got it Plenty to do all year long; skiing both water and snow, fishing, hunting, hiking, snowshoeing, snow mobiles.... I could go on, but I think you get the idea.

what type of industry are you looking for? I'm in Meridian, Southwest Idaho, great place to raise a family and lots of space and things to do.

I'm down near Idaho Falls, in southeast Idaho. I've noticed lately several businesses are tightening their belts. In not too long if it hasn't already happened the Basic American plant down the road in Shelley is closing their operations. The Wakerli company is shutting down American Rv & Marine in Idaho Falls, Motor City in Pocatello and Blackfoot Motors in Blackfoot.
Being in HVAC and refrigeration shouldn't make it too difficult in gaining employment here as that is something the community is dependent on.

I recommend the Idaho Falls area strongly. My kids were asking about our recent move at dinner tonight, and I ticked off the list of reasons - all of which have shown to have merit - for which I decided to move - lower cost of living, affordable real estate, higher quality of living, less crime, more reasonable communities, abundance of recreational activities, and yes, being able to see the stars at night.

There Was A High Demand in Idaho Falls Last Year
Last summer (2008), there were probably 20-25 openings for HVAC certified technicians in the Idaho Falls area. Part of that is due to growth in Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Ammon and Bonneville County. However, many of these companies also service Jackson Hole, WY. I don't know what will happen this year with tougher economic times.
I'd recommend following the STATE of IDAHO's Labor Website: Job Listings & Searches - Idaho.gov
Depending on where you may want to relocate in Idaho, if you do, I'd send out applications now. I agree with cleosmom, you will want a secure job before you move.
BTW - Idaho Falls is located in Bonneville County. Sometimes jobs are listed by the counties.
Good luck.

We don't have gangs in Coeur d'Alene. Where did you hear that?
