So rank these Towns/Cities
I am interviewing with a company that has offices in ID. I've been thru and vacationed but never lived there.
I'd like a place semi-rural enough for affordable land for horses. but close enough for a decent hospital and a few grocery stores...
Here's the list in no particular order:
Cascade
Payette
Weiser
McCall
Pocatello
Idaho Falls
Rigby
Hailey
Thanks everyone!

I am a fourth generation Idaho gal and grew up in Weiser. Nice little town with some great properties and still affordable land. McCall and Cascade will be more scenic but due to a new ski resort (Tamarack) the prices are outrageous! Idaho Falls and Rigby are O.K. Especially Id. Falls. Large Mormon population if that means anything=) Payette is only 20 minutes south of Weiser and kind of seedy. The Treasure Valley (Boise, Nampa, Meridian, Eagle)
are great but getting a little crowded. Land is more than in smaller communities/towns but the hospitals, recreation, dining, shopping are far superior. I live in Nampa and work in Boise as a mortgage lender since '98. Let me know if I can help you out in locating a Realtor or obtaining the best financing. (Oh!--Hailey is even worse than McCall for price since it's next to Sun Valley, and Pocatello is a nice little college town in S. Idaho a little ways from Id. Falls.)

What is the downside of the Twin Falls area, which generally includes Jerome and Shoshone, it is within reasonable driving distance of Sun Valley's recreational services.

Makay.. Idaho's best kept little secret, so they say. My husband is up in Mackay today. We finally closed on our property! Only took us 9 months...
Take a look at this. My husband went to this property today and he said the land is good and the view is spectacular. Comes with irrigation water. From what I have seen in this area this is a fine deal if your water rights are good.
And hubby said if we had not closed on the one we just purchased he'd be jumping on this one. Looks like fine horse pasture to me. Just needs a little greening up.
LandsofIdaho.com - Land for sale by Darlington, Idaho - Custer County - 10.1 acres
ps Darlington is just a few miles from Mackay.

We have lived in Weiser and Cambridge. Cambridge is between Weiser and McCall. Moving to Midvale soon between Weiser and Cambridge. We like all three places.Weiser and Ontario Oregon both have hospitals. Weiser is a little more rural than Payette in places. Just a couple of months ago we were looking at some great looking deals on places in Payette and even New Plymouth. Nice horse set up kind of places.Do not know if they are still listed we ended up buying in Midvale.
Haily and McCall and Cascade are pretty and all pretty spendy.
We like Payette but never lived there. Think it is sort of a quaint little town. It is fairly close to Ontario Oregon with good shopping.
When we lived in Challis we used go to Pocatello for shopping and liked it then. It has been 14 years now since we have been there. It was a trade off to shop Pocatello or Idaho Falls. Only passed through Rigby.
When we lived in Challis we used to drive through Makay Arco Darlington. Very cold winters that side of the state. Wind blows and often closes the highway between there and Idaho Falls. LOL Do not know if Pickles is still there. They had some wonderful hot cakes.

Pickles
Sorry my Bad I meant to say Pickles is in Arco.
And yes Cascade is pretty. Pretty close to Tamarack and that might not be good.

my ranking:
Hailey
McCall
Idaho Falls
Cascade
Pocatello
Rigby
Payette
Weiser
but in terms of proximity to a good hospital and cheap land, the first two would get knocked down.
