Anyone Familiar with Salmon, Id.?
Hi. New here.
Can anyone tell me what the scene is like in Salmon? Sports-minded or agricultural/rural? Stuff to do in town for the "active" crowd... I'm assuming not much as the population seems to be around 4,000. The nearest ski "area" (looks like maybe 1000 ft vertical drop ) is 45 minutes away.
I am interested in the level of LDS influence, as I've spent enough time in LDS majority communities to know that yes, there can be real discrimination toward the non-LDS in jobs, real estate etc.
I'd also like to know if it is very racist, as I'd prefer to be in an area of cultural acceptance.
Thanks all.

Respectfully, you should familiarize yourself with the "search" function. Lots of general info about Salmon for the taking.

Pictures of the Salmon River almost completely frozen over, upstream from Salmon.

Gorgeous area, unparalleled access to the outdoors. But it's a small, isolated town with spotty year round weather and no job opportunities.

Hi Twoponies,
I live in Salmon, so I can give this a shot. Salmon is a mix of people, so yes there are the sports minded people and we have several cattle ranches. The winters are very quiet, but those folks that like to ski do go to Lost Trail, but there are several mountain ranges in the area so there are places they snow mobile and snow board, we are a close knit community so everyone helps with suggestions on where the activities are, the town is swamped in the summer with tourist who come to float the river, or take a trip on Idaho Adventures. The LDS influence is not as strong here, we do have 2 large LDS churches but we also have every other denomination, I personally have not experienced anything negative, most are good people. I do not believe there is any discrimination when it comes to employment or anything else. But finding a job in Salmon is difficult. The Cobalt Mine is suppose to be up and running possibly by summer, they do have a website you could check out. I really cannot answer about the racism here, if it exist it is very quiet, but I do know there is only one african american family that lives here. We are not a large cultural town, people here are very conservative. I would seriously suggest a visit before deciding. Best of luck to you.
