In the brief period of time I was actively looking for work, I found wages here to be lower than in California, but then so is the cost of housing. As it worked out, my housing costs went down by moving here, significantly, and my overall wages/working conditions improved. But it could easily have worked out otherwise, I was just the lucky person who walked through that door that my new hires now enter.

Just to really emphasize the employment situation, I have a coworker who is from this area and has a strong resume, he has been looking for a different higher paying job since last October, applying for at least several jobs per week, applying in areas as far off as Twin Falls, and he has had ZERO interviews. Z-E-R-O. So he is biding his time and going back to school nights. Seems to me this forum is quieter these days, makes me think people are hunkered down right now, which is probably the smart thing to be doing, in general.

I am one of the Hunkered Down folks, Norcal!...waiting to see if my house here in AZ will sell. So far, after a month listed, not one single looker. So my plan to move north is on indefinite hold...but what will be, will be. I have my plan firmly in place for that moment when it becomes possible! And I am so happy to know your life is on a positive track! One day we WILL do lunch!

Lightbulb Ucon is a smaller area near Idaho Falls, but closer to Rexburg.

Jimbo713,

Cleosmom has given you the approximate distance. Lots of people opt to NOT live in Rexburg. They cut off time in their drive by living somewhere like Ucon ~ 1,100 people which is in Bonneville County and near Idaho Falls, but probably saves anywhere from 5-15 minutes drive time to Rexburg, depending on where one lives in Idaho Falls.

Would you be in a situation that would allow that much commute time? Some people have to live within X minutes/miles of their jobs. Does that apply to you?

You may be surprised, especially if you will be connected with BYU-Idaho how many of the faculty opt to live outside of Rexburg.

Hope that helps.

I couldn't agree more, NCM! That was certainly the case for the Mrs. & I until very recently, when after 6 months of searching, printing/faxing/revising resumes, Mrs. Breer finally has a job. It's not in her given field, but it's something that she enjoys and is doing a real service to the community, and at this point, we are thankful for that.

The fog that we've been living under for the past few months (her struggles in job hunting, a personal tragedy and such) is finally starting to lift...maybe it's because the sun is out a little more here too! I think the next few months will really be our real introduction to SE Idaho as a whole!

Take care, all! Be back on soon...for now it's back to studying!

Thumbs up Months........will become a YEAR in Idaho and a year of your training completed!

Breer 23,

Sorry to hear the two of you have had a personal tragedy. I'm kind of one of those that thinks things work out for a reason. Maybe that is why your Mrs. isn't working in her field of expertise right now. Maybe she needed to be elsewhere and wouldn't have been able to do some things.

Spring/summer are great times in Idaho Falls. Get tickets for the baseball team, if possible. I know you said you like baseball. There are so many other things to do too, but knowing you like baseball, enjoy.

Also, I have a favor to ask. If you get a chance, and if you haven't already done it, will you please post something on the CAES thread I started? I believe it will be more important with time as grad students throughout the U.S. and other countries assess where to get their advanced training. I think you have far more accurate details than many. Plus, you may be in the know about some things the rest of us aren't.

Hang in there, it won't be too many months until your first year of classes will be over.

We're glad to have you here on the Idaho CDF. Tell Mrs. B. I said hello and to drop me a DM sometime to update me.

Default a full year in southeast idaho and still loving it

What a positive thread. I love it.

Yes, we've made it here a full year and I remain enamoured of this place. There is so much to do, in every direction, we keep being like, can't believe we haven't been to mesa falls! can't believe we've only gone to yellowstone once! can't believe we havne't been to lava hot springs!

However, we plan on being here for a long, long time so all in good time.

My only complaint is that spring has come WAY too early this year, I liked last year when it was still full on winter at this time. But I know I am in the minority in my opinion there.

Cheers to all. Thanks for posting such a positive thread norcalmom. And I am glad Mrs. Breer found a job!

SAV,

I've been thinking about you lately. So glad to see your post. I'm glad this has been such a positive move for everyone in your house.

You are right, there is so much to do I often laugh when people say they don't have anything to do. And new residents bring some of their favorite things from their previous locations so the area is always changing, although the Tetons, MESA FALLS - nice day trip for a couple- can't believe you haven't seen it yet and other natural beauties stay the same.

Yes, it is nice to see a positive thread. It seems like so much news is overwhelming right now and it seems, at least to me, there is too much news.

Take care and remember, Jackson Hole or YNP still are cool. IF you are too warm, drive on up and cool down. You've lived in some really cold temps previously - Idaho Falls probably does feel warmer.
