Respectfully asking...

What towns are you talking about specifically that would fit OP's criteria? None of the towns near the Oregon border really do at all.

Gooding? It's at OP's size and air requirement, it's' far from a city, and had a view of the mountains, but it's fairly cold and snowy there, it's in the middle of a windy high desert - no trees. Pretty much the same with Shoshone, Carey, Wendell, and Bliss.

Arco and Mackey? Again, too cold.

Rupert, Heyburn, and/or Paul might work, as they're a little warmer (less snow) and about the right population, but they're even windier and even more treeless (a mix of desert and farmland). To the south you have Oakley, Declo, and Albion - but I'd wager those towns are far too isolated and cold/snowy. And all of the above, save Oakley and Albion - have suspect air quality because of their lower elevation (summer haze is bad).

Kimberly, Eden, Hazelton, Murtaugh, et al, might now be bad choices because of their proximity to the South Hills, but are again smack in the middle of the desert and/or farmland (no trees), and get the same amount of snow and wind as Burley and/or Twin Falls.

I'm just offering my opinion in regards to the OP's criteria, with the consideration that I said "you can't have your cake and eat it too" (which was the point you disagreed with). Thus far I think I've demonstrated that you absolutely cannot find a place in Idaho with mild temperatures comparable to Boise (far milder than TF), but with a) good air quality, b) trees and/or close to a forest, c) far from the city, d) view of the mountains, and e) a place with some charm that's afforable enough for a few acres.

Sacrifice any of these and you could find a hundred places. Hold tight to them and you get...Hagerman, and maybe Emmett (air quality and proximity to Boise aside).

Just my four cents...

You have an interesting name in "Canine*Castle." We all select names for different reasons, but seriously, does your name have anything to do with your love for or work with Canines? Do you hope to have a lot of Canines in your new home? If so, certain zoning or other ordaince laws may change your mind of where to look.

Let us know if your plans include a lot of Canines as that may make us think of other locations. Besides, one always needs a good DVM close by, if animals will be part of the family.

Actually, it's just a fun name I have for my home with my two canines which are on my profile photo. Some day when I retire, I plan to volunteer for the cause of animals, but that's a ways down the road. I'll never have a "houseful" of animals though, so that's not criteria for relocating.

Thanks to everyone for contributing to my thread. I am taking it all in.

Thanks for the info, Canine*Castle. Not trying to pry, some people do need more space and less people for future plans working with animals.

Since you did list UT as one of two states in which you wanted more info, I just wanted to make sure you were aware that the Best Friends Sanctuary is located in Kanab, UT. It doesn't seem to get as blazing 112 F hot as St. George and Las Vegas, since it is closer to CO, NM and Four Corners in general. Not sure of the current population <5K, I think.

Anyway, here's a link: Best Friends Animal Society - Welcome to the Sanctuary

Let us know when you find that special place just right for you. Good luck!

Actually, I did read about it on the Utah forum. I just can't thank you all enough for your suggestions. You guys are really polite and friendly and I'm much obliged for your advice.

Default Idaho county buyer beware- our experience

Steer clear of Idaho County because of their lack of land use and planning. To see what has happened to our retirement look at my posts here: bammie21 We had almost 5 years of bliss, but under all the beauty of north central idaho lurks darkness. They opened up a rock pit that had been defunct for about 15 years 250 yards across the road from our home....complete with crusher and running it 20 hours a day. We are only getting about 4 hr sleep a night Monday thru Friday. The County Commissioners only protect the health and welfare of property owners that want to make money off their land. They love us retirees to move here and willingly take our property taxes but.... also see Bammie21’s Blog Also, no one at the State level will help us either. Idaho County is BUYER BEWARE. The state will revert you back to the county. If you live in a town you MIGHT be ok. If you buy acreage out in the county like we did........anything goes and you WILL NOT be protected. If you can buy 160 acres and put your home in the middle you might be ok. Don't believe the real estate people either.......they do not disclose anything that might discourage a sale. By the way, we bought in a county approved subdivision and there are 3 other homes and about 6 bare lots affected.

Twin Falls has about 8 - 10 inches a year. Lots of land for sale. Houses run from 80K to what you want to spend in the top end. Snake River and Snake River Canyon for fishing and kayaking, Magic Mountain for skiing, Sawtooth Mountains for camping, Shoshone Falls for beauty and picnics on Dierke's Lake. If you are bringing an income making business with you, it is very resonable to live here. Spring starts end of April (occasional freak snow showers, but melts the same day) and warm temps last into November. Culture abounds in Boise which is an hour away.

That is a down-right shame. I would be so very upset and would have to pack up and leave with that kind of racket going on. I am so sorry for you.

Gosh, I'm getting to the point where now I'd rather have more rain where I retire. Where I live in Texas, we get an average of 38 inches and up to 60 per year. Of course, some are horrible storms that accompany the rain. I guess no place has everything for which I'm looking, but I keep looking. So far, southwestern VA is my best bet, I believe. I've been there and it is so beautiful. I've not given up on heading west though...time will tell.

Hello,
I am 38 single female with two cats. I want to relocate from SF, Cal to NATURE!! I need a holistic artsy community around me too. I work for myself (internet biz, writer, and life coach). I am looking at Coeur D'Alene, but have been reading the winters are brutal and long? It looks like on the other side of the lake is St. Maries and I read that is mild? Any input? Sandpoint?

Also, any comments on Twin Falls area?
Thanks!
Susan

Hi
Thanks all of you for posting all this info!! I happen to want my cake WITH icing AND eat it too! ;-)
I am looking for a small town/community on the outskirts of a larger city (Spokane, Boise). There has to be some sort of holistic/alternative community/mindset and surrounded by trees and nature, safe and quiet. Again I am 38 single female, so not too isolated or "old" or "young" even.
So my main question is - where is a nice little place that also is progressive in mindset as well?
Thanks!
Susan
