MAPS MAPS MAPS
These are important questions. To help get a sense of place, I strongly suggest using Windows Live Maps

http://maps.live.com/

Install Windows Live Virtual Earth to get a rotational view of the Earth, where you can zoom into any area and see the surrounding topography.

Another great one is Google Earth

Google Earth

Check these out for all your topo questions!!

One of the really cool things about Google Earth is that, as you look at and navigate the 3d maps, you can click on the little squares that show up around the map to pull up location specific photos, and you can add your own photos via google picasa web.

Heres a pic of SE Idaho.

Google Earth....

OMG
I live on Google earth looking at all the potential properties that could be our new house in Emmett.
Then click on Street View.
This bring me right down in the front yard of many of the homes we are interested in with real pictures.
The pictures are so clear that you can even see a neighbor sitting on the porch with a finger in his nose
My wife say's I'll fit right in

I like to use the Google street view to check out the streets and stores in different towns. You can get a good idea about how crowded the main intersections are. Also, you can get a better feel for a town by driving down Main St via Google than to check out the cities website. I have yet to find someone picking their nose, but I can dare to dream...maybe someday (fingers crossed).
