Thanks. There is a piece of property that caught our eye. We still need to visit ourselves, but that won't be until summer.

We are fixin to make our first trip hauling stuff up there this weekend. Google maps is telling me to take the 5 in CA to the 97 in OR then 84 (30) to the 82 (395) and finally the 90 in WA and into NID. Now for those of you that have taken this route are there any nasty passes or grades or twisties to watch out for? I have taken the 5 in CA before straight into OR, but have not been on those others except for the 90. This will be the shakedown run on my new trailer (full) and I want to take the clearest route possible.

Have not gone the whole route (we do I-15 to I-90) when towing heavy. But I can tell you that from Pendleton (OR) where you get off I-84 to NID there are no passes to worry about. Since you've been up I-5 to OR before you know how bad it is between Shasta and Ashland...so the question is from there to Pendleton...

We have made this drive many times and I can tell you from experience that you DO NOT want to take the 97 through Oregon......just stay on the 5 and then head east when you hit Portland. The 97 is a 2 line highway almost the entire state (if not the entire state) It is heavily traveled, lots of big trucks! I know that mapquest etc. will direct you to take the 97 instead of the 5. It will show that it is about 100 miles shorter of a trip (for me at least traveling from Napa CA to Coeur d Alene.) It will also show the 97 taking less time than the 5....but it doesn't. Trust me, it may be less mileage taking the 97 but it will not save you any time, none!

Best of luck and drive safely whichever route you choose!

I'd agree with MamasGirl, with a heavy load you're better off sticking to the freeways as much as you can. 97 is beautiful in parts (and there's a great little cafe in Madras where you could stop for lunch, and Shaniko is a fun Western town), but if you're planning on any evening/nighttime driving, you'll have lots of animals on the road. I remember it being a nightmare, especially between Crater Lake and Bend. The second time we took that route we tried to do only daytime driving. Very high winds around Madras, by the way, both times we've been up that way. I know we talked about the best routes to NID on p.1 on this thread, but I wouldn't recommend going up 95 through ID with a full trailer! You probably came to the same conclusion. I was also going to suggest going I-15 to I-90, like Sage, but then I remembered Lookout Pass, which is quite a climb, so a trailer might be too heavy.
Anyway, have a great time! Remember to bring the champagne, and toast the future, look at the lake, and breathe the air! We'll be right behind you, if the flu doesn't make travel impossible--we're going up in late May!

Check out the mid section of ID. Great outdoor experiences with small town flavor. Look for Grangeville, Kamiah, Orofino on up to Lewiston. Check out my website for a peek at ID: mtimages's photos and albums on webshots

Meridian/Boise/Idaho Falls (if you don't mind snow), Coure d'Alene (again, snow) are all great. I wouldn't suggest Twin Falls. Very small minded people, low paying jobs (in 1989 I was making in Atlanta, what I make here now). For me, I fell out of love with Idaho because of this town and am moving back to Atlanta....too bad since it's really pretty. Wish I had followed my instincts 5 years ago and moved to Boise or CDA instead.
