Best family campgrounds in the Idaho Falls area
This is likely a redundant thread, but am hoping to get some good advice on camping close to Idaho Falls....say within a 2 hour drive?

Hi norcalmom101,
Some fly fishing buddies and I stayed at the Falls Campground some years ago. It's located about 40 miles east of Idaho Falls off Swan Valley Road (Highway 26) on the way to Palisades Reservoir. There are three or four campgrounds in the immediate area all managed by the Forest Service, but I cannot remember the names of the other sites. The campgrounds lie along the South Fork of the Snake River in beautiful (shady) cottonwood stands. They are all near the town of Swan Valley.
For more information, call the local FS Office at (208) 523-1412, or stop by their office at 3659 E Ririe Hwy, in Idaho Falls for information or other ideas.
Happy camping!

Thank you pimit2! Here is another question which hopefully doesn't seem too off the wall...does anyone have any general advice on safety of a woman camping alone with kids around here? Would it be prudent to be armed? I've mostly only camped in more heavily populated areas. Also, are dogs generally accepted at campgrounds here?

Those are good questions to ask the folks at the Forest Service Office. They would know about the safety factor. Dogs - on leash - are permitted at some campsites, but not all sites. By the way, I'd like to hear what answers you get.

Just called the FS, dogs allowed on leash at Falls Campground, there is cell reception there, and the lady I spoke with said that they don't have any history that would indicate being armed is necessary, she said it is very safe. She also referred me to these two sites:

www.fs.fed.us
Thanks pimit2!

Teton Canyon, just east of Driggs up ski hill road. Campground doesn't open until June probably. Stunning spot! I'd camp there alone w/ my kid.

put marshmellows in the kids pockets.
Then the bears will leave you alone.

If SAV would camp there, NCM, then it's a keeper of a spot.
BTW - do you want official campgrounds, or great camping spots that are close?
