Default The best route driving North from South??

Hi all! If someone could give me some advice I'd really appreciate it. I'm going to be in ID next week doing some sightseeing and am trying to figure out why all the mapping programs going to NID from the south have us traveling out of ID and up through WA to get to Coeur d'alene. Why not 55 or 95? TIA

I take the 55 or the 95 myself.. I just prefer going that way and I usually make good time. Its a very picturesque drive, and I love driving along the rivers. It seems like the 55 is faster for me, but both routs are great.. Hope this helps, and have a great time! I'll be heading that way in a couple weeks.

On the "Looking to Relocate to NID" tread below we had a conversation about the best route, so you may want to check that out, p.1--depending on how far south your "South" is. The route through WA is easier if you're trying to make good time, or hauling a load. Have a great trip!

If you really want to stay in Idaho, 95 is a nice drive. If you're really trying to "make time" between Boise and CDA, I-84 to 395 to I-90 is faster...

Thanks everyone! Our daughter attends Whitworth in Spokane and our trip is to help bring her stuff home for the summer. The route has gotten monotonous, so this time we decided to take some extra days and visit ID first; coming up through NV from CA.
We're looking forward to it; all of your posts have me curious to see more of ID. btw, we won't be hauling anything but the dog .
thnx again!

Yes, these programs tend to look at total time spent driving. You have to decide which is more important, time, or a nice experience. Only you can make that determination. (I know, personally, when I'm not in a hurry, it is a much richer experience to take the less travelled road!)

Well if you come up hwy 95 we are at mile marker 105 turn left and we are the fifth house on the right. you will see a white shop first. Stop and you can let your dog out in our yard for a little stretch and R & R. Midvale is not all that picturesque but we are close to the highway and a safe place to stop for a short break. Email us to let us know if you come this way so we are sure to be here.

Chris

FYI about half way up is a little river town called Riggins. Its a great place to get a decent meal, stretch out, and gas up.. The little towns along the 55 & 95 can be pretty spotty as far as amenities Should be a gorgeous ride!

The most scenic drive is as mentioned Highway 95 and then to Highway 55, or vice versa depending on the direction you are heading.
The entire drive is beautiful. Make sure to check out Zims Hot Springs Resort and McCall and Payette Lake. From McCall you are about a 2 hour drive , maybe 1 1/2 hours depending on traffic to Boise. I believe highway 55, between Boise and McCall, was named a few years back as one of Americas most scenic drives.
