Southeast Idaho Wind
Now that was some crazy wild wind!!!
My poor strawberries I just planted are looking a bit shredded, and part of the roof of my gazebo blew off. It's been there forever, but this was the wind that did it in. Heard a grain elevator blew over too, and the road north of IF was closed for reduced visibility. Thank heavens I hadn't put down more grass seed, it would have just blown away! To my consternation I went outside this morning to find that the only thing seemingly not blown away last night was the dandelion seeds
Anyone from here know just how often the winds get that bad? I understand there were gusts over 50MPH.

Thats rough! I hate high winds probably more than any other type of natural occurance..
Heres a silver lining NM.. If you put up some wind turbines to lower your carbon footprint, that should just about cancel out your gun ownership and keep your liberal card in tact..hehe...

Yeppers, that's SE Idaho for you... windy
Did I forget to mention, most of us don't plant anything until early June? Heck I haven't even had the chance to fertilize my yards or spray for weeds

All of Southern Idaho (except the Boise area) is windy as heck during the spring, and even during the summer.
My dad used to b--ch about how spring would tease you with sunny days but windy as heck, and how the wind would ruin fishing out on the reservoir during the summer because it was always whitecapped.

'Windy' season seemed to pass pretty quick here. There are a few nuking days in the spring (like Tues) but it seems to settle down by summer. And mid summer we welcome the breezes.

Strawberries perking back up, so there's hope. I'm just glad I had the roof done or I think it may have blown off!

Hi there, SAV.
Nice to see you posting. Yes, those breezes during summer nights cool the temperature pleasantly for great evening activities and the ability to sleep in one's house without central AC (if one doesn't have it).
Hope all is well. Check your DMs in about 24 hrs. I have a little bit of info to share with you.

NCM,
It's hard to say how often the wind gusts get that strong. They do some every year. But, what amazes me is if you look at the stats CDF has on Idaho Falls, look at the amount of wind vs. other places.
In a non-scientiic experiment (in a different website) some guys in Provo, UT decided to prove that southeastern ID had the worst wind in the region. They were stunned to learn the wind was far worse in parts of UT and other areas, observed by professionals trained to observe such things, compared to Eastern ID for sure, but generally southeastern ID. Malad Pass area can do anything at any time - maybe snow in July? Twin Prism or someone else may have more info than I recall. I can't include Malad with the Idaho Falls area.
The wind blows in the desert in western Bonneville County and Butte County, but not at those gusts.
While I'd like to be able to tell you how many times/year Eastern ID gets gusts that severe, I don't know. I do know May is one of 2 months/year I refused to fly to St. George, UT, due to the severe wind and the horrible turbulence. I didn't enjoy seeing seats trying to pull away from the floor or the flight attendant being tossed around (and actually injured), due to the tailwinds and crosswinds the planes experienced flying to and from St. George.
Even when flying to L.A., San Diego etc., many people I know could always tell when the flight was in the St. George/Las Vegas area, given the wind.
May is one of those months in the Rockies where changes in temperatures happen abruptly, I don't think the wind and sudden changes are unique only to Idaho. But, I'm still sorry for what happened.
Trace's comment was funny and yours to him was funny too.
Hope today is better.
