My Husband and I own 10 acres in Kootenia County that we do not live on, our taxes are crazy. We are paying for everything in Kootenia County and we live in Bonner County. I heard that I could file for a Property Tax exempt, does anyone know how to go about this to lower our taxes?

I would call the assessor's office and ask what's required for exemption. It's been my understanding that unless you live on the land full time you're not eligible for an exemption, but then I haven't researched it to be certain.

There might be a couple of options for you. Since you don't live on the property, the homeowner's exemption is out. If there is timber, you should be able to get a timber exemption, or if "farmland", an agricultural one. For the timber exemption you'll need a timber management plan, you can hire one done, or call the state forester, they do them for free. Plus, they can give you ideas about the health of your forest and things you might do to improve it. A timber exemption takes quite a bit of the sting out of the tax bill.
