What is the favorite shade tree of southern Idaho??

Hi DR! 5 minutes online--I'll try to make the most of it! I'm learning so much about what'll grow in NID, but that won't really be of any use to you, I guess. But what we realized when we visited our property a few weeks ago and stayed for 5 days just down the road at a guest ranch (what a great idea that turned out to be) is that we really can't make any decisions about where trees should go, and which trees should be removed until we know more about the light conditions throughout the year--sunrise in winter, sunset in summer, etc. Anyway, I was so impressed with the chestnut trees in NID--super shade trees. I don't know if they'll grow in Southern ID... But isn't it great to be able to start planning?

Globe willows, silver maples, firs, linden, river birch, Ash, Quaking Aspen, for trees.
Lavender, dogwood, many shrub varieties do well,
I would stay away from poplars as the suckers are terrible.

Quaking Aspens! I just bought thirty of them to plant around the cabin. And aspens are fast growers.

Boy you got that right on the aspens. I planted one gallon size in July last year and they are over 6 foot tall now. Yippieeee. And one was desert for a deer last fall and still is doing nicely. The Scotch Pines are also drout tolerant once they get past the first few years and even then only need water about once a week in well drained soil. We really like them but to some they are just a wild overgrown pine.

Globe Willow and Corkscrew Willow grow amazingly fast here. Kind of freaky really.
