Then one of my buddies tells me he heard wolves howling the other night and I should probably carry a gun.
That part puts the reality of Idaho in your bones. This is the real deal, not like the little San Bernardino National Forest I was used to. I have not even scratched the surface of this state, but I do feel at home here.

Fisherman,
I love Round Lake! I've hiked around it and got off the path and it was mightly lonely...and guess what? That nice big round mountain to the west (can't remember the name) also has mountain lions on it, so be prepared! The real deal, exactly like you say. Nature doesn't care if we're good or bad people...the wolf isn't going to give us a break if we've argued in favor of the wolf program...
Here's something else, closer to the human world: Has anyone been to the corner of Dufort and 95 (just before you get to Round Lake) where you can pick up discarded furniture etc.? What is it they call it, the Dufort Mall or something ? It's behind a fence of blue tarps. We haven't stopped by yet, but if it still exists when we've got our cabin built, we're going see what the deal is!
Here's Round Lake in late summer:

Great picture CFF. The Dufort Mall is also the transfer station (dumpster spot), they have some shelves where people can leave/pick up stuff that's still usable. It's a great idea, I've unloaded a few things that were too good to just dump, but not something I needed any more. And have added to my book club.
Fisherman, thanks for the info on the Kelso Lake development. To get to Kelso Lake, when going N on 95, about 3-4 miles N of Athol you'll drop into a valley and come up a hill on the other side-that's referred to as Granite Hill. There is a left near the top that takes you over to Granite Lake and Kelso Lake, and on into Clagstone.

Cff,
I would rather face a wolf than a mountain lion. If they will dine on people near an Orange County Suburb imagine what they could do here. You would never be found. Kind of like a Hometown Buffet for big cats...Sick Humor I know....

Note that news bit was from Dec 2008...I don't think it will happen...
Re internet...if you're right in Sandpoint you can get DSL. If you're around the area and in line-of-sight from Schweitzer, there is some sort of broadband network. We're in the Dufort Valley (between 95 and the river) and we have to use satellite for our broadband. Wild Blue is good people, but their product isn't impressing me...lots of outages and horrific latency. HughesNet (we have that in a different building here) is quite good in reliability but still has that satellite latency issue, but some of the worst customer service I have ever dealt with, bar none.

With regard to the development, there was a story about it on the radio just this week. Still, with any luck it doesn't go through. I didn't realize Potlatch owned that much contiguous property as described in the article.
We went with Intermax wireless internet a month or so ago. Service has been very good so far, with about 2M up and down. I just hooked up our VOIP phone last night ($10 a month). If it works out as planned I'll cancel our land line. Wireless internet and VOIP cost about the same as we were paying for our land line and dialup ISP.
