Wallace
I just have to say that Wallace Id is one of my favorite towns to drive thur. During childhood my family and I would drive from WA to WI for family vac to visit the grandparents. I always looked forward to Wallace, it is so scenic!!!
Just wondering if anyone has lived there or lives there now? What is it like there? It's one of those places if I could live anywhere I would live there, if I didn't have to worry about a job etc.. etc... I like how it is tucked into the mountains.
thanks!!

Hi Daisy 78,
I find it very interesting how you feel about Wallace. I am 70 years young and that is where I was born. I have no recolection though, as my parents moved to Spokane and then to Seattle where I spent the rest of my life until recently. I have mentioned many times to my wife that we should make a trip that includes Wallace, and now I may just do that. As for living there I am not sure what the weather is like but would suspect cold and snowy winters.
Every time during my life when I was asked, where were you born... I felt like saying... Oh just some little podunk place in Idaho, but now I feel like maybe I should have said.....I was born in the wonderfully beautiful and special little town of Wallace in Idaho.
I will be watching for others to comment on your inquiry, and thinking about going back to my birthplace to see what I have been missing.
Thanks for bringing it to the forefront.

I live in Wallace Idaho, oh goodness. It's a beautiful town, yes, but being 15 years old and living in a town so small is not exactly super fun. I like having a small class size and I love all of the summertime events, though!
It's very very quiet and life sort of revolves around the latest gossip on who cheated on who and who's getting a divorce, etc. Haha. Typical small-town stuff.
There are not a lot of jobs in Wallace, no. Most people work in Kellogg, and some work in Couer D'Alene -- Kellogg being 20 miles away, CDA being about 50 miles away. The mines are slowly starting to slow down and that means more and more people are being put out of work, which is not good.

Breeh, What is the road like into Wallace now? Years ago I read a book about Wallace and it said it was snowmobile in in the winter. Is the road kept open now?
Grocery stores in Wallace?
I thinnk it is great you are reading and posting information on this board. Not often we can get first hand information.
Thanks so much Chris
OOPSIE. I was thinking Wallace and the town I read about really is Warren. DOH !! Sorry. Still you are making me look into Wallace.

Hahaha, ok Chris, I don't live in Warren but I will tell you about Wallace anyway, if you're still interested.
We have lots of snowmobiling trails open in the wintertime. I'm pretty sure they stay open in the summer for fourwheeling and motorcycling, but don't quote me on that, I'm terrified of things with wheels.
There is a grocery store. sort of. It's a really lousy grocery store but there is one. There are better ones in Osburn and Kellogg, Osburn being 5 miles away and Kellogg around 20. There's also a WalMart in Smelterville, which is further than Kellogg but less than half an hour from Wallace.
Sorry it took me so long to respond! I forgot all about this site. =]

You might remember Warren is by McCall. I think you just follow Warren Wagon to the town of Warren and the road turns to dirt for a ways. I believe you can only access this area after the snow melt. Otherwise, it's snowmobile in. People do live up there during the winter. I believe there a bar and restaurant and maybe a hotel.
Not much but, I have heard in the summer you can get a great burger there!!

Good old Wallace! It is a lovely spot, but a struggling little town.
Since I-90's completion (taking out the last traffic light between Boston and Seattle)
and the silver market price crash, Wallace has quite a chore in reinventing herself . . .
But she's a tough old mining town and she soldiers on!

Idaho Tell us more. Does this mean Wallace is not likely to boom in the next 10 to 15 years? I thought we had moved to a small town here in Cambridge and all of a sudden things are going crazy!! Booming and I am afraid they are going to boom us right on out of here. Guess we are going to have to look into Wallace further. Are there lots of houses for sale up there?

Wallace's main business these days is tourism. Year-round outdoor attractions, such as skiing, snowmobiling, ATV's, the famous Hiawatha Bicycling Trail, hunting, fishing, hiking, etc. and mining history of course - tour the Sierra Silver mine, wander through the mining museum. There's a wonderful core group of thespians keeping the 6th Street Melodrama Theater alive and kicking and laughing and singing! As far as real estate, google a "wallace, idaho real estate" query and you'll see what's currently available. Prices are climbing up, but still a bargain compared to so many other places. Schools are struggling (but where is that not a problem right now?)
