I've spent quite a bit of time in St. Maries while working on my place near there. The people struck me as very friendly EVEN with my California plates. I dont think you and your wife would have a problem fitting in there at all. You should go visit and stay there a few days, I think you will get the same vibe I did. Many great places nearby as well to look at. Good luck!

Moving to St. Marie's
We are retired (60's) wanting a small rental for next spring in/near St. Marie. From everything we've read here, and our own experiences, coming up and actually living in the area for a few months is the best way to find out whether or not it fits our needs.
Would someone please refer us to a Realtor/rental agency for the St. Marie area? Word of mouth sometimes works well too.
Thank you!

I have done cultural studies at the college level and my daughter knows some neat and fun stuff about many cultures, as well. She locates all of the countries on the map except for Tajikistan and Turkmenistan and tells about how they live, some of their customs, imports/exports, animals native to the area, etc. That's exciting...She is 3 years old. It is refreshing for us to see other cultures BUT I don't want to drown in it and have myself wondering where MY OWN culture went, why IT is not respected or acknowledged, and whether I could find a place to go and be a part of my MY culture and language--a culture and language I cherish.

First of I know this is an old post... but...
Good for you that your 3 yo knows all that about other cultures.!!! Thats amazing!
I second your opinion on our own culture.. I get so sick of hearing about people trying to be politically correct to others out-side of the norm... We are too busy trying to welcome other nations into our country instead of dealing with the basic human rights of our natural citizens... What is america coming to when all of our country cant speak our own native tongue, have jobs to support families that have lived here for 100s of yrs... I see it as taking our privaliges away and given to outsiders. Its a common sense right of respect what when someone says hello to say hello back.. this is America.. Our national language is English... Dont tell me that I have to learn other language (even though I do) to be able to speak to my neighbors... If you live here you should know that language.. Case closed!

I was born in St maries and i still have lots of family there but let me tell you that my moms side of the family (hispanic) was the ONLY colored people in town. Coeur d alene is not that much better but its a lot better now then when the arien people were there.
I dont have much experience in St maries but medically stagnant is not the right word. if you plan on moving there i hope you have a wish to live in the 18th centery. the snow fall is ungodly... summer time its takes 45 min to get to a real city. (aka Coeur d alene or CDA for short) in winter time... if you make it down the mountain and over the pass about 1 1/2 hours...
the person who said that they didnt want to start something i understand why but they did not acuratly describe it...
so let me put it to you this way... I am 1/2 mexican (i dont speak spanish i grew up in norhting idaho and until there californians moving there in the 90s there were no brown people)
i grew up most of my time in CDA (its bigger) i am brown but very light because i was afraid to go in the sun too much. i have walked down the street and had people throw stuff at me because i was colored. i have had the SCHOOL bus pass me because i was colored. i have had redneck people refuse to sit me at tables. i have had cops pull me over for theft of my own SUPER HORRIBLE car (im talking a REALLY beat up 1989 ford tempo... no one will steal that) i have had people follow me around stores thinking i will steal something when i have cash in my hand and no dang pockets. (i was dressed for going out with my gal friends not skimpy dressed just no pockets)
I have had my apartment manager call the cops on me 900 times because i use to sit on the stairs and talk to the only other colored people (aslo hispanic) that went to my whole school.
I have had the stupid skin heads chase me down the street when i was just walking down sherman... (i can run fast now at least)
i went to sandpoint once for some thing they were doing up there some selling stuff whatever... and i had like 15 people following me... so i ran to my car and left and i have NEVER been back.
its beautiful in pictures... but i HATE that place.... i joined the army just to leave... and st. maries is not so violent they... its just different...
town motto: go on vacation end up on probation.

Uuuuh... What about all the Native Americans around there? They look pretty darn brown to me..
When I have my summer tan going I am pretty dark complected, and could probably pass for Hispanic or Indian.. My brother is even darker, and we never had one issue with anyone all the times we have been there for weeks at a time. I'm just saying..

What point are you trying to make?
Please don't post inciting remarks like that about our beautiful city..we love all our visitors, especially our friends from Idaho!!!

I live in vegas. It depends how much money you have and where you live. Six or so years ago I walked around freely in my area. I do not now. My area is becoming like a cross between Mexican culture and different African languages.
Up to the 60's it was ok to feel questioning about such a replacement. Now its a hassle for most people to be other than silent.

Yeah but the thread is about St. Maries.. Between St. Maries and Plummer/Worley i've seen PLENTY of "brown" people as you said..
The Indians dont seem to have a problem...
