[mod cut]

It is a false stereotype to say that Idaho is racist.

False? No. Outdated? Yes. Are you new enough you've forgotten about Richard Butler and his national bro nazi movement that was housed in your backyard?

You can't be surprised your area gets a racist rep when neo nazis parade down Main St.

False, yes. A tiny percentage of a whole does not dictate the direction or intention of said whole. Especially when discussing someone that doesn't even exist any longer.

I disagree. A few yahoos don't make a state racist, and I would argue that even in the times you are talking about, racism still existed in a much higher proportion in most other states, including those that contain a higher frequency of racism against whites (yes, that is possible despite what the modern liberals want you to think).

Stereotypes by their very nature are usually misleading at best:

Quote:
ster·e·o·type
ˈsterēəˌtīp
noun
1. A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
I think Jimbo is on point that a few bad apples may have made a large impression in the media, which is prone to hype these things anyway, but isn't reflective of the attitudes of the vast majority of Idahoans either now or in the past.

Unfortunately, reputations frequently last longer than what caused them.

False, no. Fair or not all it takes is a few kooky outliers for an entire area to get a reputation. Hayden was the head of a nationwide effort.

I agree that racism was much higher elsewhere-even when we had the Nazi compound. Doesn't matter. We had enough to earn the reputation. Those other areas didn't have, for instance, racists arranging neo-Nazi marches down Main St... That type of thing tends to leave a lasting impression.

Yup. Very true!

The biggest problem is once any place gets a racist reputation from a tiny group of racists who make some big display, the reputation seems to persist forever.

But when a state is full of racists, then an incident is soon forgotten.
Ohio had more KKK members than any southern state had at the Klan's height of power in the late 1920's, but no one thinks of Ohio as being racist, even though those old Kluxer's kids and grandkids probably share a part, or all, of Grandaddy's beliefs.

But when 15-20 Kluxers holed up in a claptrap compound in the Idaho woods raise a ruckus, the rest of the nation's hair stood up on end in fright, and our racist brand is still smoking on all our backs, even though it all happened 20 years ago, and every one of those thugs is long gone or dead now.

Idaho has always had far more Jewish folks and folks of all colors and nationalities living here happily than that tiny bunch.

But fear is always blind, and facts never seem to be able to quench it.

The fact is:
Idaho got a taste of what racism is.

Idahoans kicked all their butts soundly, and an Idahoan bankrupted them, and took everything they owned.

[mod note: This thread is about racism in Idaho, and specifically Coeur d'Alene. Discussion of political philosophies go elsewhere.]

Looks like they are making a kind of peace park out of the old Aryan Nations compound.
