Immigrant farm workers' challenge: Take our jobs - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100624/ap_on_en_tv/us_immigration_take_our_jobs - broken link)
im not impresed
specialy in this recesion
once unemployment checks go byebye
then americans will work tha farms
for american not ilegal alien wages
an most ilegals dont work on farms
them thiefs work at higher wage jobs
I read an article once (knew I should have bookmarked it) in which a study of farm workers in the U.S. revealed that only a very small portion of illegal immigrants in the U.S. worked in the fields. I don't remember the exact figure, but I know it was under 3%. I think Americans would rather have their construction jobs, manufacturing jobs, hospitality jobs, food service jobs, etc. back. Once unemployed Americans are working in those formerly American-held positions, we can worry about the illegal farm workers.
Im curious why you address this to Conservatives when most people with many..
Different political views are against illegal immigration.
Like Kele said Farm workers is a small number of the illegals.
We could do a guest worker program for them, they work the season they go home.
If they are caught here off season, they go to prison.
The meatpacking, construction, housecleaning, foodservice jobs kick and keep the illegals..
From those jobs. Then employers will be forced to raise wages and offer incentives.

Frankly, I'm quite tired of people assuming that it is just the farm jobs that these illegal immigrants are taking.
Have any of you actually taken the time to work with a background check company to figure out exactly what these companies do to determine whether or not an employee has a clean background and may be a suitable candidate? I have, and I will say that it seems I did most of the work for them myself. I've also run into a situation many times where my information (because I have a common name) is mixed with someone else's. These companies only use a name and birthdate to check for felonies, not a driver's license and social security number.
We know that identity theft exists and that social security numbers are also sold. So, if one has provided these background check companies with "suitable" names and numbers for the background check company to contact "previous employers" (this information can be made up since most background check companies have no information on an individual until they create a report), and if there are no felonies that show up, this can result in a good report being sent to the potential employer.

How about no guest worker program? I think that's much better policy don't you? And putting a lid on all immigration, more than we already do, and limit that immigration from select countries. We don't need immigrants from nations that don't have any similarity to us. Or better yet let's limit immigration to Ireland, Canada, Australia, a few from the ultra politically correct police state island, err sorry I mean UK, and New Zealand. Now we don't have to worry about spending money on ESL! Genius!
I dont see anything wrong with a guest program. They work for the season then go home.
I would like to see legal immigration tighter as well.
Why cant we train and educate more americans to do more tech and medical jobs?

I do. The guest worker program can be used by Americans that are primarily the urban poor, so they can get some money.
And that is my logic to severly restricting immigration. We already have 200+ million Americans that were born and raised here, I'm sure we can find some to train, educate, and to fill jobs in. We don't need immigrants at all even, but immigrants have a well-known liberal bias that don't share the same values as Americans the government wants to dilute the founding values of this country with immigration. Quite frankly the only 2 countries that are most similar to us are Canada and Australia
The whole tone of the original post in this thread is wrong. "Conservatives?" You have to be a conservative to be opposed to illegal immigration? That is mistake number one right there, to me. Secondly, I read this article on Yahoo earlier and there is a lot wrong with the overall idea of the challenge. People don't say that illegal immigrants are only working farm jobs. How about challenging us to work the other jobs that they are working?
I read somewhere that farmworkers only make up 2% of our entire workforce. We already have unlimited H-2A visas for farmworkers so why would we need another guest worker program? What is going on is that the farmers have cheap illegal workers available to them so they don't bother using the H-2A visas to acquire legal immigrant workers.
