The problem with slur words for whites is that whites will tend to wear any such label with pride. Now you see people boasting of being white trash - even songs about white trash culture. Whites refuse to become victims is why I think.

You name a restaurant "Cracker Barrel" and the whites will flock to it. But other groups will file lawsuits.
It's not that they refuse, it's that these "slurs" were never intended to systematically victimize whites in the first place.

Redneck, white trash, hillbilly, trailer park trash, southern white - people get called those terms all the time.
I realize that the terms exist--however, they don't seem to come into usage with the same frequency.

That said--have we, as a nation, sunk to such an illiterate low, that we cannot refer to people intelligently, without the use of ethnic slurs?

Otherwise, this becomes no more than a name-calling smack down. I don't care how many insulting labels there are for the various ethnicities. Why does the discussion have to incorporate them? What is wrong with using "disadvantaged whites" or "disadvantaged blacks" or "disadvantaged <insert your ethnicity here>"? The use of ethnic slurs merely serves to divide Americans even further along the skin color barrier.

As a person whose immediate family incorporates nearly every skin color under the sun, I find slurs abhorrent and I believe that we can have the discussion without the derogatory labels.

Some of them definitely are meant to be very derogatory. "White trash" for example. But instead of getting hostile, this is what some will do - turn it around and wear the label with pride.

The fact that those terms are used against whites of lower economic means tells you they're meant to victimize - but you can only be a victim if you let yourself be one.

Or there's this -- the stereotypes are all spelled out - but it's turned into a kind of a pride.

I totally agree. This will also stop some of the victim mentality so prevelant among some.

Like Malamute said, names are only offensive if you let them or want them to be.
Most of the time, by not taking offense, the other person turns out looking like an idiot.

As I was, I'm sure most you was taught about "Sticks and Stones" when you were little.

I find your characterization of people out of work offensive.
