ILLEGAL aliens are almost always criminals. They commit felonies to live here.
And our forefathers didn't come here illegally. A foreigner is not allowed to come here illegally for "a better life". What part of that is being lost on some? Why is there no regard for American citizen who are having less of a better life in the way of loss of jobs and increased taxes?
So then what language are we writing in here? So we Americans who speak English are supposed to cave in to a vocal group who insists WE speak their language? When I have lived in other countries, I learned the language of that country. It's called respect.
This isn't about teaching "immigrants" English anyway. It is about expending our time and dollars teaching illegal aliens English who have no right to even be in this country. Then they give birth on our soil and their kids only learn their parent's native langauge at home and enter our school system not knowing English either.
Teachers have wasted a tremendous resource in dealing with immigrant children who are not only illiterate in their own language, they have no desire to learn our mainstream language. I think we can all agree that to become successful in the US, learning English is a prerequisite, both academically and socially.

Annie - of course we are writing in English. It's the dominant language in the US and the only one accepted on this forum. However, the language being dominant in the US has very little to do with it being the OFFICIAL language. We would need a law declaring English the official language in order to for that to be so. Since we do not have such a law, there is no official language...
Think of it this way: We all know murder is wrong. However, without a law declaring murder illegal, there would be no official repercussions - even if lynching were a commonly accepted way of dealing with murderers.

It's really not that difficult of a concept.
Without a law you would refuse to speak it and make it your first language?

It is a very fine line between English being our national language and being our official langauge. Congress declared the former to be our language and therefore they claimed there was no need to make it official. The only difference is that making it official we wouldn't have to print federal documents in other langauges. All of the above however does not negate the fact that English is our national language. I know certain groups resent that fact because their native language isn't English but I say tough. It is what it is.
How does one explain that in order to become a naturalized citizen one has to have be somewhat litterate in English but not some other language? I think that is pretty much of a tell all. As you said yourself, it really isn't that difficult of a concept. Are you aware that well over half of our states have declared English at their official state language?

I'm interested in you fleshing out the murder analogy.

Purely semantics. As far as I am concerned, English is the official/most prevalent language in the US. It is really a silly debate.
