Using just Mexico as an example: it would make more sense for that nation to be officially bi-lingual (English as well as Spanish) vs, the USA since Spanish is not a significant language outside of Spain and Latin America. The closest analog to Spanish would be French in international importance.

Hell: one nation whose culture is in a lot of regards based on Mexico's is the Philippines------------chief difference is that its two main tongues are English and Tagalog. And, their overall knowledge of English is a huge advantage since Filipino people are hired worldwide----------unlike Mexicans.

Wrong! English is a Germanic language, not a Romance language like Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, French, Catalan, Galician and Valencian. English and Spanish are as similar as Mandarin and Russian.

You forgot that many Spanish speaking countries (basically all the land South of the Rio Grande) do business with each other. They don't do it in English, they use their native language, either Spanish or Portuguese, and some of those countries, like Chile, Argentina and Brazil have a booming economy. In Europe the EU's documents and manuscripts are printed in twenty something languages, to accomodate all 27 EU members. So why can't we do the same in this country? It is not going to make the USA less of an English speaking nation. We all know that to be sucessful in this country we must speak English.

Hiring Filipino over Mexicans has nothing to do with language. It is all about the people's intellectual and academic preparation. Filipinos know that if they want to have a better life, they must attend universities and get a degree, in the process they learn English. Then they get visas and move to countries that need their expertise (same with Indians and their huge presence in bio industries in the USA). Mexicans don't have that incentive. Most of them that move to the USA don't have an education, don't speak English, and all they want to do is make a few extra bucks to send to their poor families back home. Of course they have no interest in learning English. They don't need that skill to work in farms or restaurants kitchens. If they don't do it for themselves, do you think they are going to do it for you?

While English is a germanic language, it must be remembered that English is unique in its propensity to 'borrow' words from other langauges -- the Romance languages included. How many of our words are derived from Latin for example? Quite a few -- mortician/inspire/inaugeration/scribe etc... Of course Spanish is also a language that has been co-opted into English with words like lasso and rodeo (off the top of my head) being quite common. Chinese gave us yin/yang and of course Russian gave us the ultimate gift of vodka. We won't even get into the numerous words for foods that many many languages gave us.
So while on the surface Spanish and English have not much in common, the fact is that we do have many, many words in common all ready.

Then care to explain why most signage in Manila is in English? Obviously that language is quite significant in the Philippines despite its pathetic attempts to make Tagalog an official tongue.

As for the 'perceived' need for illegal aliens----------not anymore. Our economy is in a severe recession and there are Americans willing to do said jobs.

The Philippines were INVADED by the USA from the start of the Spanish-American War (which we all know it was an excuse from the US to take over Cuba, PR, Guam and the Philippines from Spain) until WWII, 1898 to 1946. Of course you will see English language signs. Nothing to do with English being more important than their native language Tagalog. Someone might say that English was FORCED on them. HMMM, maybe is payback time for the USA and that's the reason why a foreign language is being imposed on you now.

OK, so when are you going to the fields to pick up some tomatoes? Can I call you to clean my toilett? I think your answer will be no to that. Thank you.

Your point being? No one is imposing any language on us; if your are talking about Spanish, yeah right. The Spanish speakers are fleeing the USA in droves.

Spain invaded the land of the Aztecs and forced their culture on them, so what is the difference?

Welcome to history, my friend.
