The National Council of La Raza spends most of its time protecting and advancing the rights of Latinos through advocacy and community work. But as it wrapped up its convention in San Diego last week, it found itself defending its name.
That's because activists who oppose illegal immigration are saying in e-mails, during street protests and through the media that "La Raza" means "The Race," and have been calling the organization a hate group.
The accusations have prompted soul-searching among NCLR supporters as to what the name actually means and stands for. Most say the situation is the result of a word lost in translation.
In the past few days, organizers have addressed the issue at news conferences and on their Web site, where they explain their interpretation of the name.
"While it is true that one meaning of 'raza' in Spanish is indeed 'race,' . . . words can and do have multiple meanings," reads the statement. " 'La raza' means 'the people' or 'the community.'
"Translating our name as 'the race' is not only inaccurate, it is factually incorrect. 'Hispanic' is an ethnicity, not a race. . . . Hispanics can be and are members of any and all races."

La Raza Defends its Name, Literally | Immigration | AlterNet

You can tell by their defensive posturing that they realize that America is wide awake, thereby making it necessary for them to back pedal if they wish to continue mooching from the American taxpayer's dole.

Remember my saying that MEChA, etc. will wind up selling out the illegals to save their own butts?

Too; when California turns agains the illegals----------it will be sudden and severe.

Even our Mach50 alluded to that occurring; apparently, he is sensing the growing hostility against certain 'people of color'----------which is sad because many innocent folks may be in danger.

You definitely called it, I remember you clearly stating all of the above. At the end of the day, they are slowly retreating already. LaRaza will sell them out to the highest bidder.

With the hammer falling on corporate America, it will be interesting to see if they pull out all of their funding as well. At this point they have no choice but to realize that their entire house of cards is collapsing.

The problem with that poor excuse is that it "la raza" is never meant to include ALL the people of a particular community, it is meant to exclude white and black and other Americans. "La Raza" is meant to include those of Latin American ancestry and ONLY of Latin American ancestry and is meant to disregard American citizenship entirely.

It has nothing to do with any American community and seeks to link only a particular type of people together disregarding citizenship or any bond other than "racial" or "ethnic". La Raza is as racist as you can get.

Martin Luther King:

"and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together."

La Raza means that different flesh shall see it apart. La Raza goes entirely against the melting pot America, the America working toward unity and away from racism.

Exactly. Due to his perpetually plummeting, popularity and long outlived usefulness, Jesse "the Pimp" Jackson hitched his pimp mobile to LaRaza's and created a Rainbow Push "latino" branch.

Every time the MSM and print media trouts out Jesse or Al to "speak for the black community" I send them emails expressing my dislike and distain of their pretense that either of these clowns speaks for me. The civil rights movement died with Dr. King and clowns like Jesse and Al merely serve to confirm that.

Here's hoping for the descent of both groups into financial oblivion and hell.

Somehow I doubt that Gisele Bundchen (the Brazilian supermodel) were what La Raza had in mind.

Seriously; those dysfunctional clowns seem to prefer a certain cultural cohort of Mestizos------------no others need apply. It would be comical if not so serious.

Exactly. The least educated and most desperate are more their cup of tea. They are the illiterate, poverty stricken masses that Mexico is happy to rid themselves of. In Mexico they stand for nothing and therefore will fall for anything.

La Raza panders to a certain segment of the population which revels in believing that they (and only they) are the downtrodden of society. La Raza fosters a victim mentality in those Hispanics who are more likely to want to believe that any and all of their problems in life can be traced to the fact that they are being held down and held back by all who are not of "the Race."

AZ is correct in stating that they are looking for a certain "type" of Hispanic to represent. Certainly those whose features suggest a stronger European gene pool are not representative of the typical La Raza membership.

............and, I am quite willing to suspect that only 'certain' indigenous New World peoples would qualify as well. I can just 'see' a full blood Cherokee (if any actually exist) try to claim La Raza.
