Immigration used to mean coming here because we were the land of opportunity.
Now we're known as the land of entitlements to some.

If you are uneducated and poor..America is where you want to be.

I think you are correct, Benicar. We will wait for him/her to prove otherwise. None of my ancestors were illegal aliens either.

How would they stay? Do you think they dived off the island and headed for New Jersey? No. They were put on the next ship headed back to their home country. (and relatively few were rejected, BTW)

Even before the 1920s, when the United States determined which immigrants could legally enter and live in this country by implementing a quota system, there was a preferential treatment given to more affluent immigrants. While passengers whose ticket was for "steerage" or third-class had to face a series of entrance requirements that lasted between two and five hours, no such admission tests were given to first- or second-class passengers. Unless these passengers showed evidence of a contagious disease, they were given quick entry to New York City.
Requirements for Immigrants at Ellis Island

You can't compare the system back then to the system now.To say the current system is akin to instant gratification is ridiculous .

Illegal immigration is not a part of our system. Comparing legal immigration back then to legal immigration today is one thing but comparing them to the instant gratification of illegal aliens today is a whole different ball of wax.

We should turn to our history books and point out to people why today’s American is not willing to accept the “new” kind of immigrant any longer. Back in the early 1900’s when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York to be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home (although some maybe had their names changed because the immigration clerk couldn’t pronounce it?).
This author is just mad that not only Europeans are immigrating to the United States anymore.

Really, and just where is your proof of that?

Yes, I did and coming here legally today or yesterday wasn't instant gratification. Those coming here illegally want instant gratification as they aren't willing to wait in line to do it legally.
