We should turn to our history books and point out to people why today’s American is not willing to accept the “new” kind of immigrant any longer. Back in the early 1900’s when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York to be documented.Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home (although some maybe had their names changed because the immigration clerk couldn’t pronounce it?).
Exactly - back then immigrants didn't get a free ride once they showed up. If they couldn't make it here, couldn't adapt, then they went back home in a short time. One-third of immigrants returned home within a short time because there were no food stamps, no WIC coupons, no free government housing.
We've become the giant welfare office of the world. Have too many kids that you can't feed? Don't feel much like working? Dropped out of school and so have no education, no job skills? Then come on in!!! Get your food stamps, your WIC here. Don't want to save up money or work your way through college in your own country? Well hey - just come on in and demand the Dream Act - your free college education in the US!!
Think your country needs some reforms? Your politicians are a bit corrupt? Well whatcha waitin for? Come on in to the USA - don't bother to fix your country's problems, don't vote in better candidates - get to the USA - it's the easy thing to do.

Why didn't the previous generations of immigrants try this also? Couldn't they have voted in better candidates or attempted to fix their country's problems before coming here?

Only because there were no laws against immigration. Furthermore, many from Ellis Island stayed after being told they must leave. Therefore, they technically were illegal. Of course, none of our ancestors fell in the latter category, wink, wink.

What difference does it make how things were in the past? Most immigrants of the past came here within the laws in place at the time. They didn't come here against the law as these illegals are doing today. Where ones ancestors were from in the past is totally irrelevent to our immigration laws in place today.

I am not an authority on this subject, but I do believe when immigrants were rejected, they were not released like illegals today, they remained at Ellis Island awaiting final verdict. If they could not win their appeal, they were returned home. Are you suggesting they jumped from ships and swam back across the Atlantic?
BTW, none of my ancestors were illegal aliens.
