Instead of attacking the drug war on a military basis, what about on the financial basis?

The main reason for all of this drug activity is massive profit.

It may be time to really consider legalization of some drugs from the standpoint of removing the monetary benefit from all drug gangs from Mexico to Afghanistan.

It's a very simple problem that neither Washington or American people have the will to take care. So either shut up or close your eyes.

The solutions can be fairly simple:
1. death penalty for anybody in possession of X grams of drug or
2. legalize all adult drug use and use the money to fund public health care.

Either one would solve the problem for good.

To legalize illegal drugs, would also be legalizing Drug users, addicts, abusers and pushers.
Even if drugs were legalized, there would still be a "black market" for drugs.

Offers for black market Viagra and other legal drugs are circling the internet.

Exactly! When you legalize you can start treating the sick (addicts) like sick people, and not like criminals. You can also empty the rehabs of all the people that are simply there as an alternative to incarceration, not a real drug "problem", and free up beds for those who really need it.

It's very hard in today’s society to admit to illegal activity when seeking help because there is the real danger that the police will be notified and you will be going to prison instead of treatment and or your children, property and job will be lost.

Putting addicts in prison does nothing to solve the problem of addiction, it just creates more havoc in the addicts life, and in the lives of those around them. Putting a productive member of society, who happens to indulge recreationally, in prison is even worse.

Not all use is abuse, not all users are addicts, not all distributors are "pushers", most are low level, just supporting their own habit, the big profits are closer to the top of the pyramid.

The most effective pusher in your town is the local liquor store proprietor (alcohol pusher). These pushers have multi-billion dollar companies buying prime time TV during sports games (when kids are watching) to push their product on everyone and the best marketing teams money can buy. Ditto legal, but toxic, pharmaceuticals, and your friendly pharmacist (pusher)

Your local drug dealer can't compete with that. All he has is the hysteria of the media, government propaganda, and conservatives screaming, "We've GOT to protect THE CHILDREN!!!!".

The fact that there is viagra (both real and fake) on the internet has a lot to do with your needing a perscription to buy it legally, and that the pharma companies place such an artifically high price on it.

While illegal drugs have a high price, that price is due to their illegality, not some company that has exclusive rights to make it setting a monopoly fee. The two issues are not at all comparable.

Ah yeah...go to a gun store and take a sample of where the arms are manufactured. Like most everything else, lots of foreign goods.

It's not like it hasn't been done. Just look at Holland.

When's last time you have been to a gun stone? They banned all rifle imports.

The cartels aren't simply running all kinds of drugs, they also control the human smuggling routes, they control the extortion rings, the kidnap for ransom, the murder for hire, and the automobile theft. The cartels control the chop shops along the border which is why so many of the killngs involve the "mechanics" working in these chop shops and the used car dealers in border towns.

The cartels also control the weapons smuggling, they control the counterfeit documents sold on Juarez streets. They have all kinds of legitimate appearing stores and restaurants and bars, they control the border town brothels - which are legal.

And there is more than enough money for each of the big drug lords but they aren't interested in sharing or competing. They want it all.

It's ridiculous that anyone believes that this is a simple problem easily fixed by making every sort of very dangerous and addictive drugs sold alongside the beer, wine, and cigarettes in every convenience store and grocery store.

The cartel members - the 14 year old hitmen, the auto thieves, the smugglers simply aren't going to put on clean shirts and ties and try to get some job at their local McDonalds for the very low wages those jobs would pay them. There aren't jobs. There aren't opportunities.

Also the drug lords are very much glorified by popular Mexican culture, the youth admire the drug lords, the popular music makes them folk heroes.

This goes way deeper than what some people want to believe.
