Despite potential concerns about what will fill the void, a DHS official told Fox News that Border Patrol is better staffed "than at any time in its 86-year history." The official said the administration has doubled the number of agents since 2004 to more than 20,500. The official said the deployment earlier in the year of 1,200 National Guard and other initiatives have helped border officials seize more illegal cash, more illegal drugs and more illegal weapons over the past two years.

Yep Seize everything but ILLEGAL ALIENS

Texas Governor Perry tried a virtual fence a few years ago. It was an expensive waste of money and was cancelled. It included cameras along the border that the public could watch on the Internet and click a button to report illegals crossing. Physical barriers and boots-on-the-ground are superior to a virtual fence.

Totally agree. The virtual fence had so many bugs in it and things that didn't function it was a huge waste of money. By physical barriers I assume you mean the double layered wall with a path between the two walls for the BP to patrol. That was what was erected on about 25-30 milies of the border with San Diego and it cut back illegal entry tremendously.

A camera cannot arrest and detain. It was fun watching them at work though.

And she wants a year to decide what may work. Sounds typical. She must need the funds for more TSA officers. It's US citizens that are the REAL threat.

Bush's virtual fence was an only partly implemented money pit that didn't work. Even Republicans agree on that. At least Nap has stopped the spending on this boondoggle -and can hopefully get a better solution in place ASAP.

True, we don't need virtual fences, we just need the same border security we have over in Iraq against the Iranians.......

BTW, there was a thread opened on this subject yesterday......

Wrong! It worked for its purpose, which was to give O'Reilly, Medved, and all the Neocon blabberheads a bone to throw the bubbas so the Neocon talking point readers could spend more time on things such as talking us into war with Iran, etc. and giving the rest of the lemmings a false sense of security and accomplishment so they could return to watching televised sports, etc., whilst in the meantime the invasion continued according to plan.

What a novel idea! Imagine having troops guarding our borders with the same rules of engagement as those patrolling the borders of foreign lands.

Looking at Juarez, TJ and so on: either Napolitano does something or it'll be done by us Americans who are madder than hell.
