After being held at the Van Nuys jail, Perez was sent to the Women's Detention Center in Lynwood where she told authorities she was in the country illegally and was referred to the Immigration Detention Center in Santa Ana.

Authorities let her go after she pleaded with them on behalf of her 10-month-old son, whom she had left with a babysitter. She's now provisionally freed, but must wear an electronic monitor on her ankle, which, she said, embarrasses her.

"I didn't commit any crime to be having to wear this," she said. She is currently awaiting an immigration court date and ponders her future. Perez came to the United States from Mexico with high hopes for a better future.
Oh really? and don't you need a license to operate as a street vendor anyway?

She didn't commit a crime? What part of "Illegal" in Illegal Immigrant doesn't she understand. She can get it taken off--if she elects to leave immediately and not come back.

The entitlement of these people really creeps me out. They know they are breaking a law but they just don't care. Even after they get busted they claim they didn't do anything wrong.

It is against the law to sell around the schools," he noted.

Perez said she knew this, but as with other ice cream vendors interviewed, she also said that the area around schools present the biggest selling areas.

"That's where we can sell a little bit more because of the children," she said.

Would you want your kids buying food from these street carts? Me? Oh he** no!

Just yet another example of "these laws shouldn't apply to us because we're special"

I doubt very much they even have a Food handler's permit let alone anything else.

Shut down all unlicensed street vendors, regardless of immigration status.

Only Americans and people legally here are expected to comply with food safety laws and of course pay income tax.

These sidewalk vendors compete unfairly with legal businesses that must pay legal wages, have TB skin tests and other health checks for the food handlers. The illegal food vendors avoid all that overhead, they simply decide to sell whatever and break any law that doesn't suit them.

And yes, you can get Hepatitis, Salmonella and all sorts of diseases from improperly handled food.

I learned my lesson from those TJ food carts. Oh so good at 2 am with a belly full of tequila but some of the stuff you can get will kill you without a Dr.

Amoebic Dysentery for starters.
