One time we asked for money up front for a non-emergency situation (shallow cut on a hand)...and they pulled out a wad of cash and started pulling 20s off of it. You can bet if we had billed them, we would have NEVER seen a dime.
Sure they have money. Why wouldn’t they, given the freebies they enjoy. I stood behind a “suspected” illegal in line and watched as he paid cash for a 60 inch flat screen TV. The wad he pulled out of his pocket would choke a horse.
I thought that our government requires emergency care only to get the patient stabilized and then they can be transported to a hospital or health care facility back in their own country.
Same with all the free maternity care, it should not get the parents their permanent right to stay, they should leave the hospital with an ICE agent escorting them back to the border, the illegal can choose if she wants to take baby home with her or abandon it here.
Unfortunately, that is rarely the case. When they attempt to send them to their homelands, they are sued by the ACLU or other anti-American organizations, and accused of racism and inhumane treatment. After all, there are no hospitals outside the USA.

He is right, in that we only have to treat emergent cases period. A simple example is say a man comes in complaining chest pain, we find out he has clogged arteries so we have to do a cabg. Now another comes in with same symtoms but this time just stomach ache. We only have to treat emergiences but for the most part by the time were done with the testing the bills rack up..
I bang my head everyday trying to come up with a solution to this problem to protect the hospital from the greedy lawyers and yes to treat the human who needs help. There is a lot of politics and big money involved and as usuall the taxpayer is stuck with the bill.

In the Fresno area of California the level one trauma center in this big farming area is full of illegals every frickin day. They use it as a clinic and it pisses everyone from the RN to the CEO off because they suck up the time and resources of the ER. Would be nice to have them pay something up front but again as stan4 said its against the law and the Hospital would be sued big time. We as the public need to get the laws changed. And its as simple as that.
So if you are going to make a FEDERAL LAW that says I have to treat them or lose my license, someone better damn well pay me for my time (and taking on the liability).
It's my understanding that only those Hospitals and care centers that elect to receive subsidized Federal funding through the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) are obligated to treat illegal aliens. Is this not the case?

If I may answer that question AlabamaStorm, any hospital that accepts Medicare reimbursement must accept anybody that walks in the door, regardless of ability to pay. Since last I was involved in setting up a budget for a new hospital, approximately 70% of income is from Medicare.
Emtala was written into law to stop facilities from not accepting patients and trying to divert them to other facilities based on their ablility to pay.
For example, a facility knew the patient was homeless so they would try to have the patient diverted or "dumped" to another facility because they knew the patient wouldn't be able to pay.

Correct mamamute, all the facility is required to do is whats called an MSE or Medical Screening Exam. It would be nice to have a licensed employee do the MSE and if not an emergency just tell the patient to "see their primary care physician." More often than not though the facility will treat the patient, the reasoning is what if the diagnosis is wrong and the patient die later. Then the lawyers are swarming.

From what I remember once you admit that patient into the hospital the patient can refuse to be transferred. Now once the physician determines the patient can be discharged and requires no more inpatient medical treatment, they can be released.

The problem is -- currently American citizens are being denied health care or are signing away their homes, their assets for health care we can no longer afford.
However anyone crossing over the border or overstaying a temporary visa can expect completely free health care, no questions asked. At some point that will become a problem for Americans. Imagine facing life-long debt over some health condition knowing that illegals get it totally free, no copays, and if they work can still manage to have $400-$600-$800 a month to send home.

Yes so many facilities do not want to be the one to deny coverage to someone who shouldn't be here in the first place because of the frickin media. Hell look at that illegal in Florida when the hospital PAID to send him back home he fought tooth and nail tried to SUE them. They shoulda castrated his arse while he was under !!!!!
